Comments about Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO-80 Closed Studio Headphones:

First I want to say these headphones have fantastic sound. I've been using two pairs of Sony MDR-7509HDs for the last ten years or so and these blow the doors off them. Now the bad news. There seems to be a disturbingly high frequency of failure with these headphones. In doing my research a frequent complaint was "right speaker failed". And sure enough, after less than a week of play mine failed without warning. Two hours ago they sounded fantastic, I stepped away for an hour, came back and the right speaker is dead. Tried it with several sources and checked the sources with my Sony's and the right speaker is indeed dead. I am exchanging them for another pair (failure rate isn't 100% and the sound is good enough that I'm willing to roll the dice again - once.)

Comments about Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO-80 Closed Studio Headphones:

The 770's got re-spec'd (check the Beyerdynamic site, they are quite clear about it) so old reviews, or references to older stock in newer reviews can be misleading. The newer model seems less robust, less durable, and is definetly +8 db at 100 Hz, so the bass is fat. The older model is flatter with a wider soundstage. Both are rediculiously comfortable, even with the Pro designation and the incresed clamping force. So these would be comfy and fun, with a fat bass - not flat and accurate studio phones... if you are running a separate headphone monitor bus, you could EQ them adequately enough, but don't expect it to be right out of the box. Unfortunately the pair I received started to crackle in the right after about 15 minutes of use, which is supposed to be the telltale for impending right side failure, so those were returned as defective the next day.

These headphones are the most awesome phones i have ever had on my ears. I discovered them when I was recording at Orange Whip Studios in Santa Barbara, CA. They are clear, comfortable, well made. Totally awesome headphones!
