This pair of Alesis M1 Active 520 Near-Field Reference Monitors offers incredible definition and flat frequency response with the help of high-precision drivers and a carefully designed crossover. The rear-port provides deep bass-extension and high SPL output, and the rear-mounted EQ switches allow the user to tailor the speaker to the studio environment. A 1"-thick front baffle minimizes speaker resonance and the acoustic waveguide evenly disperses high-frequency sound. The Bass Density control lets you dial in balanced sound regardless of room or placement. The Alesis M1 520 monitor's top-mounted power/clip indicator lets you know if the speaker is clipping.

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 520 75W Active Near-Field Reference Monitor Pair:

Not a very good set of monitors. It has a high pitched tone when it is on that can be very irritating. Also the power lights dim at half volume suggesting that it is loading the supply. Alesis tech support says these are not issues and is perfectly normal for this monitor - go figure. Guess they set their product expectations quite low on this one...

Nice. No bass boost.

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 520 75W Active Near-Field Reference Monitor Pair:

Just wanted to add to the other review...these things sound VERY good for the money (I have mixed and listened to a lot of high priced speakers, and I'm please with these). One caution...according to the manual, the switch on the back is not a bass BOOST, it is actually a bass CUT. They have it on there in case you want to use these with a subwoofer. SO...if you don't want to CUT the bass, leave it in the "58" position. Actually, these things still have a lot of bass even with the "cut" on, but if you want full bandwidth, leave the switch in the lowest ("58") position.

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 520 75W Active Near-Field Reference Monitor Pair:

These little things SMOKE! I love the way they look (the blue LED's that turn red when you really crank them are really cool), they are super solid, and best of all, they sound great!I'm not sure that I would do a critical mix on these, as they almost sound "too good", but then again, they have all kinds of controls and switches on the back, so you COULD probably mix on them. I had to look in the manual to figure out exactly what some of the switches on the back did, but the manual is VERY easy to understand, and it also had some good information in there about speaker placement, etc... All in all, these things rock, especially for the bucks!!!

Comments about Alesis M1 Active 520 75W Active Near-Field Reference Monitor Pair:

I just got these speakers, and I am VERY impressed with them. They LOOK great, they SOUND great, and they are built like little tanks! I wasn't sure what to expect at this price point, but I am very happy with these...they have lots of controls on the back to tailor the sound to your environment (I left the highs and mids "flat", but I used one of the bass boost buttons). Speaking of bass response, these little babies have lots of low end (especially for their size). You have to remember that these are ported in the back, so don't put them to close to a wall, or you will "choke" the low end. Speaking of having them near a wall, there is even an adjustment on the back to compensate for the fact that having your speakers near a wall or in a corner will have an effect on your bass response. All of this control adds up to better mixes, because you need a speaker that not only sounds good, but is ACCURATE as well! These things get PLENTY loud to mix on...I have done a couple of trial mixes on them and the mixes have transferred quite well to other systems...always a good sign. When you get these you should play some music that you are very familiar with on them, and adjust the switches in the back until it sounds "right" to you. This will allow you to do mixes that will sound good on other systems. One other cool feature is that they have cool blue LED power indicators that change colors if you get the speakers to "peak". I didn't even notice this feature at first, because I had not turned them up that loud, but when a friend of mine came over, I wanted to play the speakers for him, and I turned them WAY up, and that's when I noticed the blue LED's changing to red (well, more like purple, but you get the idea!).I am very happy with these, and I would imagine that anyone who wants a really good sounding set of monitors at a great price would love them too!
