Comments about Akai Professional EIE I/O Audio/MIDI Interface With USB Hub:

First and foremost- the Akai Professional EIE is a great deal.

I'll start with the bad news first: it's got a decent weight to it and isn't bus powered- so you have to be within three feet of a power socket to turn this thing on. The channel 1 & 2 phantom power started to get noisy after sitting in the cold for too long one night- but the manufacturer warranty covered it.

That being said, I've had it for about three months and I love it.

The metal case is durable and gives me confidence that drops and scratches are nothing to worry about. I'm currently working on a couple sound design projects and have been recording some solo musical works involving a keyboard, uke and acoustic guitar. I keep it right next to my computer for quick recording purposes- plug in the USB, power on and I'm ready to go.

There's no software required for your computer to recognize the device, but it does come with a light version of Cubase- which is great for any beginners who have yet to acquire a DAW of their own.

The knobs, switches and lit-up meters make it unique. I can't complain about the preamps one bit. MIDI inputs are always nice to have, and I love having four quarter-inch audio outputs. The monitoring section has all the options you really need.

This is a very, very solid piece of machinery at this price, do not pass it up if you're looking to get a nice interface to get you started in recording.

If you're seasoned with recording, the best part about the EIE is it's ease of use. Plug in the USB, power on and go. It's not bad to travel with at all.
