Comments about Hal Leonard Basic Fingerpicking (Book/Online Audio):

This book many people buy in hopes of seeing tab that will teach them how to play like the Indigo Girls, or Mary Chapin Carpenter, or the Beatles, Byrds etc. That is not the case. This book is a little mis leading in the way it is advertised, but not by design but by people hoping to take another easy step and "tell me how to do it" instead of "show me generalities" and I will figure it out myself. Sokolov shows you how each of the listed artists acheived a sound based on other artists and those artists interpretations of that style. One thing builds on another-which is theme in Sokolovs books. Does he lead you by the hand and tell you how to do it-NO. Does he lead you by the hand, show you the general direction of the stream, gives you the "fishing pole" and tells you where to dig for worms-yes. If you work hard with this book and the play along cd you will eventually get it. If you are hoping to be shown exactly how to do it-then you are better off buying a "your favorite artist/album songbook" and watching a couple of videos of your favorite doing the tune you want to see played and doing it that way. If you want to learn how to play for a lifetime this is your book, if you want an afternoons entertainment, then pass.
