Great head.... when it's working

Comments about Crate FlexWave Series FW120H 120W Guitar Amp Head:

I have owned this head with Crate's 4x12 slant cab for about a month now. Initially, I was very impressed with the sound of this system. The Flexwave technology is as good as any out there in trying to duplicate the feel and sound of a tube amp by using solid state technology. It is far more warm and natural sounding than many of the other offerings in the solid state market. Note; this is not a real 'modeling' amp head like the Line 6 Spider. It does have adjustability for high, mid, low, shape, and gain settings, but the only real effects are reverb, chorus, flanger, phaser, and delay. This is a plus in my book where so many of the new solid states are OVERWHELMING with the presets and options. You can dial in some nice tones on the clean channel, which is really where this head shines. The overdrive channel is adequate, but not great. It gets the job done but you'll find you either have too much gain or not enough depending on adjustment. The high gain channel is just plain miserable no matter where you set it, and really is just a way to make a lot of incoherent noise and messy sounds. But if you take some time and work with your settings, you will get some really pleasing sounds from this simple-to-use, simple-to-adjust head. The physical build quality is good, and should withstand the typical gig-beatings over time. The footswitch feels really solid and seems like it would take some abuse. This head features a built-in tuner which is, as expected, inaccurate, but it will get you in the general ballpark. And regardless of what you read, this head will send out a lot of power to your cab.

When it works.

And that is the problem here. The unit I have will occasionally drop the volume to about 50% with no warning. Sometimes it comes back, sometimes it doesn't. If you shut the amp off and walk away for a couple hours it's 100%. If you read reviews on various sites about these Flexwave series amps (heads and combos) you'll see that these problems are not uncommon. Problems with volume, problems with effects stuck on, problems with channels blowing out, the list goes on and on. Fortunately, Crate has an excellent warranty and their customer service is very friendly and responsive (in my experience).

This head is a phenomenal deal if you like the features and sounds. It doesn't sound like anything else I've ever played and I am in love with the tones and sounds I can get. However, if you need to be sure your amp head is going to perform because you're getting paid, you really have to question the reliability of this one. For the price, it would be an absolute steal if you could be sure it would be problem-free. Five stars because of reliability issues. Would be a 8 or 9 if it were bulletproof. Is it worth the chance? That depends on how much risk you are willing to take.

Comments about Crate FlexWave Series FW120H 120W Guitar Amp Head:

I've had this crate amp for several years now and this thing cranks. Clean or distorted the sound really comes through. It would easily fill a High School gym with power to spare. I have it going through a Crate Half Stack (4/12's). I can't say enough about this Head. All in all this has been one of the best purchases I have made. It never gives me any trouble either. BUY NOW!!!! ENJOY!!!!
