Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-DRIVE Tube Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

So there I am, sitting at home in front of my 200W, 2x12 solid state combo amp trying to get some dirt and grit going . . . and it's not happening. Then, along comes the Blackstar HT-Drive and voila! instant grit. I've got a basement full pedals for all kinds of things, including a brand new overdrive pedal that got great reviews (elsewhere) that turned out to be a real dud. I did some more research, looking for a true tube-based pedal to help turn my amp into more of a tube-driven amp, and my gut told me to try this . . . and am I ever glad that I did.

It's very simple to use: Just dial up the amount of gain, adjust the tone, dial-up the output level and play. It's as simple as that. The unit can be tweaked to give you everything from really dark, gritty OD a to really bright bite. I started with the factory suggestions - which work really well for most applications - and then tooled around from there. I get some great 60's and 70's overdrive sounds like Clapton and other blues-rock artists, which was exactly what I had hoped for in this pedal. And yes, the tube tone really blows away any of the transistor pedals I've seen. The HT-Drive is really warm, only like a tube can do.

When putting this pedal into your chain, I recommend treating it like an extension of your amplifier and putting it at the end of the chain. This keeps the overdrive from distorting or coloring your other pedals, and really treats the HT-Drive like a preamp stage. I also own a HT-Boost that I put in front of the HT-Drive, which gives a huge presence to the entire guitar rig and provides me with additional control of the overal tone.

You should note that the HT-Drive (as well as many of the other Blackstar HT-series pedals) has a BIG footprint. I had to practically put it all by itself on the pedal board other wise up front it dwarfs my BOSS and other similar style pedals. It is also very heavy, so plan on lifting weights if you place one or two Blackstar on your board.

Also, you MUST use the power adapter that comes with the HT-Drive. You can't use power chains like the 1-Spot to power the HT-Drive because it will just laugh at you (not literally, of course!) It operates at 300V HT, and the included power supply has like a 10ft of wire on either side of the converter, so make some room for this as well (that's a "plug" for purchasing the 1-Spot Kit so you can really free-up some room in your power strip.)

Good luck, and enjoy the Blackstar HT-Drive.

Undeniably Great!

Comments about Blackstar HT Series HT-DRIVE Tube Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

Everyone speaks highly of the Tube Screamer, and I was looking for a tube-driven overdrive pedal with that kind of credibility. I took my chances with the relatively new HT-Drive, and it paid off. This pedal is a monstrosity! I have it hooked up in front of my Carvin X100B and the addition to the tone is very noticeable. Switching the pedal on and off provides a clear contrast between average tone, and beautiful, thick, saturated gain. The pedal does not lose any of the amp's original character. The tube grill in front of the 12AX7 is also a nice touch. It's built pretty sturdy too, feels very solid. Overall, a FANTASTIC pedal.
