I tried this out compared with the Yamaha 62, side by side, Woodwind and Brasswind sent both so I could test them. The difference was unreal. My sound was absolutely gorgeous with this saxophone. The low register sang with a deep, rich, warm tone. The high register spoke beautifully and effortlessly. When I played for Dr. Hemke at Northwestern, he loved my sound on it. I would recommend the Yanagisawa Bari-991 to anyone who's serious about playing bari. (recommended for Classical saxophonists, I'm not much of a jazzer.)

I played on a Yani 990 Bari in high school, and have since played on newer 991s. The 990 was the same as the new 991. Anyway, it was a great horn and the best things to say about it is that the dynamic range is incredible. Unlike some Baris, which seem to have a dynamic range of "on" to "off", you can easily get out pianissimos to fortissimos, and beyond, and without ugly distortion. The Key action is great, and I really enjoyed playing jazz on it. The keys, however, are somewhat frail in comparison to beginner model horns, so this horn is NOT for marching or for young students.

The B-991 is a great Baritone Sax. I have played Yamaha's, Selmer's, and Jupiter's. This sax had it all. It can hit the low notes very well and at very soft levels. Getting it to sound right in the beginning is tough but it is well worth it. The mouth piece is not recommended and I would buy a different one if possible. There brass mouthpieces seem to work well. The only problems I see is that the low A key is small and does not seem the sturdiest. Also, the high G sharp is hard to come out with in the beginning. All and all this sax had awesome tone quick response and is bold. I would encourage the B-9930 but if you can't afford it this B-991 is the best sax you can buy.

I bought one of these brand new back at the end of July and all I can say is WOW! The action is great along with the tone quality. What I'm most happy with is how easy it is now for me to play the low C, B, Bb, and A at the soft dynamic levels, even at ppp.
