These pads (also used on its saxophones) are longer lasting and provide a better feel with increased projection than standard clarinet pads.Redesigned register tone hole
This tone hole was scientifically designed and placed for extremely accurate intonation.Rounded bridge key connector

Great Instrument

By M.E. Dillard

from Fredericksburg, VA

Comments about Yamaha YCL-221 Student Bass Clarinet with Low Eb:

I am more than satisfied with the Yamaha YCL-221II Low Eb Bass Clarinet. I especially like the smaller case and the way the clarinet breaks down. It is much easier to transport and carry and the case is well made. I play in a local community band and everyone just loved my "new horn"! It had been years since I had played either the bass or Bb clarinet but I found my lip pretty quick. This bass is very impressive, both in looks and sound. It is easy to play and I would think that it would be good for anyone from beginner to pro. It came with cork greese, cleaning rag, bore cleaner, and neck strap, everything that you need. It also comes with Yamaha's 4C Standard mouthpiece which was rated as the number one mouthpiece for students. It is easy to put together. I have nothing bad to say about this bass clarinet. Buy it and enjoy.

Good instrument

By CAT

from Undisclosed

Comments about Yamaha YCL-221 Student Bass Clarinet with Low Eb:

Great instrument with good price. Upper register is played with ease and it has a good sound. I like the smaller case. Don't be surprised if you have problems putting the instrument together the first time. Read the book! It doesn't put together like the one piece base clarinet. I now can put it together with ease.

yamaha ycl-221

By jazzman-WXgsJ

Comments about Yamaha YCL-221 Student Bass Clarinet with Low Eb:

I think that it was the best bass clarinet I had ever played on. The tone is absolutely beautiful and powerful. It has a very good, clear response, especially in the clarion and chalumeau registers. Its dark sound blends well with the rest of the ensemble and it is also a good solo instrument. I highly recommend it to anybody.

Comments about Yamaha YCL-221 Student Bass Clarinet with Low Eb:

This Yamaha bass clarinet is excellent in its overall tone quality and intonation. It has a rich and vibrant lower register that says "this is a bass clarinet". I I love it and will be using it frequently.

great for the price

By jenna

Comments about Yamaha YCL-221 Student Bass Clarinet with Low Eb:

My mom got me this horn when i was in 8th grade, i had previously been playing a low quality vito and fell in love with this one. i can play just as high on my bass clarinet as i can on my clarinet. it has great tone throughout it's massive range. my instructor loves it too. the only problems i've had is the rubber rings around the pads make it difficult to set up, and i've had to have it adjusted for leaks a few times, but that's life. the neck tenon on mine is extremely tight. but all and all, i love this horn and would only trade it for a wooden low c one. if you don't need the low c or don't have this money, this horn will be great for you. Out of the 5 instruments I own, this is my favorite.

Grenadilla, Eat your HEART OUT!!!!!

By Rilez

from Brissy, Australia

Comments about Yamaha YCL-221 Student Bass Clarinet with Low Eb:

Being a pro clarinet player, I was offered a position playing Bass clarinet (occasionally doubling on Contrabass, Eb Soprano, Eb Alto and Bb) and automatically assumed that I would be dishing out $ for a pro model grenadilla body clarinet. I viewed the repertoire, and saw that it didn't require a Low C, and breathed a sigh of relief, before seeing again that It would still be expensive. I went to a few music shops, and asked to try their pro bass clarinets, and they were good.....Very good, But they were EXPENSIVE. I went back again on my weekend off, to the same places, asking to try some cheaper models. They asked if I would like to try something plastic. I agreed, as I thought it was worth a try for if I ever was thinking of buying a second instrument. I was handed the Yamaha: It was amazing, sounded better than most of the wood models I tried, its range was huge, and the tone was spot on. 2 days later I picked up my own instrument, and to my surprise the case was identical to an Alto Sax case. I often now get comments on how amazing my Bass Clari sounds, and I just smile, as I'm a pro player playing what is called a "student model" and compared to my Bb/A Pair of Buffets this bass clarinet is on even par. But low notes are even better. I love it.......10 StarsRilez

Incredible!!

By Yves

from Ottawa Canada

Comments about Yamaha YCL-221 Student Bass Clarinet with Low Eb:

Our school bought this BC on January and when I started using it, I was playing an old crap with a mouthpiece that had almost no more cork, I was amazed by the difference of sound and response. I was in love with the case which is green and is so small. The most intelligent thing is the BC is cut in half, reason why the case is so small, but also its now easier to carry on the bus when there is like 100 people on it.

Good Student Model

By Susan--MDHn

from Sunnyvale, CA

Comments about Yamaha YCL-221 Student Bass Clarinet with Low Eb:

I've been using this model since last year, and it makes a much better sound than some of the other instruments I've used. A bit on the pricey side, and the mouthpiece that comes with it isn't very good, but it's a great instrument for beginners and more experienced players.

A Terrific Instrument!

By John Centenaro

from New Jersey

Comments about Yamaha YCL-221 Student Bass Clarinet with Low Eb:

I've just gotten back into playing Bass Clarinet after a hiatus of some years, and I was looking for a reasonably priced, high quality instrument for concert band and chamber music work. After playing it for about a week now, I can honestly say that the YCL221 has really exceeded my expectations. It has a full, rich tone, the keywork is rock solid, the response, especially in the potentially problematic upper register, is clean and secure, and even the case is of the highest quality. A couple of quibbles: The mouthpiece that came with the instrument was not very good, but I replaced it with a Vandoren B44 which works much better for me. There were also a couple of minor intonation problems, specifically flatting in the throat tones around first space "F", but the Vandoren mouthpiece has helped to alleviate this, and with a bit of practice I've been able tune these notes satisfactorily. All in all I believe that this instrument is a great value and I would heartily recommend it to any potential buyer.
