Comments about Yamaha YAS-23 Standard Alto Sax:

I had purchased this Sax for my husband as a Christmas gift because he always expressed the desire to play again. He was so elated to receive it and started playing it immediately. This sax has a great horn sound. He loves it! One would not ever known he had not played since college. Bear in mind, he is nearly 50.

    Great fun

Comments about Yamaha YAS-23 Standard Alto Sax:

This is a great sax. I have had it for four years and I love playing sax. My only complaint is that it goes a teeny bit flat in the high notes.

    A Great Horn

    By Alex P

    from Pflugerville, TX

Comments about Yamaha YAS-23 Standard Alto Sax:

I love this horn. It has great tuning in the highest notes, and the low notes come out with ease. My friends envy the ease of use that this horn has. I'd recommend this horn to beginner and intermediate players.

a good investment for any player

    By Matt Bell

Comments about Yamaha YAS-23 Standard Alto Sax:

Ive been playing on this horn for 7 years and it continues to amaze me with its sound/tone quality and its easy playability. I am playing with a Vandoren v-16 mouthpiece which also helps with this horn for classical music. It is a good investment for any player either new or experience

    Great for beginners

    By L-1VeyI

Comments about Yamaha YAS-23 Standard Alto Sax:

Starting out on this saxophone, it's been really a great instrument. Though, I'd suggest taking it in once a year for an annual check-up just to make sure it's in playing condition. The 23 is built like a tank because it's for a beginner, so it can take a pretty considerable amount of wear and tear. But I'd recomment using a Selmer C* mouthpiece and vandoren reeds with the saxophone for classical, and a something along the lines of a Meyer and vandoren v16s for jazz. Great ligatures that go with this sax would be Rovners and the Vandoren Optimum. Though, after a few years, especially for high school students, they should take up more advanced saxophones like a YAS-875EX, YAS-82Z, Selmer's Reference 54 (also a really great instrument), Yanigisawa 991, Selmer Series III, Yamaha 62, or even a Mark VI (be careful with selecting them though). Great saxophone for beginners but after a 5 or 6 years, good to switch to a professional horn.

    Start with this one !

Comments about Yamaha YAS-23 Standard Alto Sax:

Gives a nice tone for a student horn. I played on Jupiter ... Buffet Crampon and on Selmer and this one gives the best playing feeling. I'm playing for 10 years on the same YAS23 and with proper care and maintenance ... it feels like new.

Best Student Horn I ever played

    By Eddie Pimentel

    from Chatsworth

Comments about Yamaha YAS-23 Standard Alto Sax:

I played many saxophones. I tried Selmer, Bach, Jupiter and all the other brands. But when I started out with the YAS-23 it never failed on me once and now has become a friend that helped me throughtout my musical career. Unfortunatly I will never forget my first saxophone. Now I play the YAS-875EX, but if you are a beginner and looking for a good saxophone it's worth your money. This is the best beginning saxophone to ever be manufactured and I suggest you start out with this one, it well worth your money.

    Great Student Horn

    By Emily-WHc5Y

    from Chicago

Comments about Yamaha YAS-23 Standard Alto Sax:

I played on this horn for five years and it's just about the best student horn ever. I don't recommend any student horn except this one. I've found it useful in lots of styles, I use a Selmer C** with this saxophone. It doesn't really support some of the tricky fingerwork that I do in Klezmer music (Jewish Jazz), but a beginning or intermediate player should be able to get it to do just about anything they want. I had no trouble with high register notes, but on this horn the low register sounds were hard to produce softly. However, I don't really recommend this horn. I think that it would be better for a person looking at this horn to go for an intermediate instrument. I recently purchased a new Yamaha 62II pro horn and really love it. While the YAS-23 is a decent horn, I definitely recommend spending the extra couple hundred dollars and getting an instrument that will produce a better sound.

Perfect for a student, so so for anything more.

    By Ryan Sensenbrenner

    from Kalamazoo, MI

Comments about Yamaha YAS-23 Standard Alto Sax:

The YAS-23 is the best STUDENT alto on the market. I've had it for 8 years now, and it has never had a serious problem (although like any sax, I strongly recommend sending it into the shop for a tune-up every 6-12 months). It has a good response on the low notes, something which is rare on student models. It can reach all the way up to high F, which is the standard range of the saxophone. I have not been able to get mine to play altissimo (the notes above F, some saxes simply cannot play them, even if the musician is very skilled), although I have gotten other YAS-23s to high F#-Gish. The biggest weakness to this sax is tone. It has near pro quality key-work, and the best tone of all student models I've played, but it does not have the same warm tone as intermediate and pro horns.

This is the best student saxophone period.

    By Tyler A.

    from Rome, GA

Comments about Yamaha YAS-23 Standard Alto Sax:

I come from a small town, where only a few families have the money to buy a decent saxophone. All my friends had Amaties, Keilworths, and LA Saxes, which my band director had never heard of (of course, he was a percussion player.) This Sax got me 1st chair in every honor band within 50 miles of Rome, and All-State twice. I would definitely recommend this to a beginning musician.
