I have been playing alto saxophone since the beginning of my musical ventures at the start of the 6th grade. I'm in tenth grade now and I have recently picked up the bassoon. I have always wanted to play the instrument, however the only instruments we had at the time were a Shreiber made in the 60's and a Fox Renard made in the 80's. Needless to say, Neither instrument was in great playing condition, however with the help of my director we got the Renard working. Then my director called me into his office one day and told me we were getting a bassoon. Specifically a Fox. Specifically a Fox IV. As you can imagine, I was salivating on the spot. I'd been playing bassoon for about a month and I was getting a brand spankin' new Fox. I've been playing for about five months now and have really gotten the hang of the instrument. The Fox IV moves very easily from low to high register and quite easily from high to low as well though slurs down more than an octive are a bit tricky to compromise. The keywork if very comfortable for me. I find that the bassoon has a very soft and appealing effect to it, which in my oppinion is the ideal effect for all concert and orchestra literature. I have experimented with store-bought reeds and found that Jones reeds compliment the tone of the instrument very well (and luckily for me I have an oboist band director who can shave my reeds for me and fix any irregularities the Jones have). My only complaint about the Fox IV is that it is cosmetically less appealing for the fact its joints are not reinforced with metal rings at points of connection, and at the casual glace the instrument is less appealing due to this fact. However, if ever a good bassoon for a (slightly) affordable price there was, the Fox IV is definately amung the bast. I highly suggest the instrument for Middle and High Schools, as well as college players who need a quality instrument with full keywork.

I love my bassoon and can find nothing wrong with it. The only thing I found wrong was that the wing joint didn't fit down all the way at first but it does now. The bassoon has a very good tone quality and will last through college. I would highly recommend getting this bassoon. Any level of player would find this a good horn for them to play.
