I used to use Chartier reeds when I was a beginner partly because my embouchure wasn't strong enough to handle anything else, and partly because of their ridiculously low cost. However, once I got into my third and fourth years, it became obvious that Chartier reeds were not doing anything for the quality of my sound ... They're pretty awful, from the intonation (incredibly flat) to the quality (break frequently and with extreme prejudice). I would definitely not recommend these reeds to anyone but the beginning oboist, and even then only as a last resort.

My daughter is a beginning oboist and struggled for several weeks with a more expensive reed recommended by a local music store. When these reeds arrived she was finally able to play the notes that were absolutely unplayable with the more expensive reed. I bought her four reeds that she rotates as she plays. She says she's very happy with these new reeds.

My daughter loved this reed because it was easy to play. I was happy simply because of the price. The bad thing is that she couldn't get some of her notes out with this reed, but could on a little better reed from my local music store. Still an awesome deal for the reeds. And she loved them, but as she advanced, they didn't work for her anymore. But, I definitely recommend them for beginners since they go thru them so quickly.
