I Purchased the R13 in March of 2005. I had played on both R13 models (Greenline and Original) and my preference was the Original R13 model. The Greenline is just as exceptional as the original, and it is really a personal preference. The Greenline is probably more preferred up here in Alaska, due to the constant changes in temperature, but I found that the Greenlines composite body didn't produce that gorgeous "Crack", as I like to call it (I think all of you pros out there know what I mean), that the solid wood instruments make when in the lower register. I'm told when fabricated right, the R13 is the optimal clarinet on the market. Not to mention that I believe that the bore of my clarinet is oddly wide compared to the other students here, (all have Buffets). I guess luck played a part.. but Make sure you break in your clarinet if its solid wood. (ask an experienced CLARINETIST about break in habits)

The R-13 is a great clarinet, but finding the right one is hard to do from and on-line purchaser. So far I have had to go through two exchanges and both R-13's have had major issues. Now for a $2,400.00 instrument wholesale, you would expect near perfection, wouldn't you when you unpacked your R-13? And yet when I have had Qualified Technicians (in Clarinet repair) examine these instruments, majors problems were found. One the first problems was that the Tenons and Joints were seriously out of alignment, a minor problem if the clarinet was not under warranty, but still a major hassle to deal with. Second I had the replacement clarinet for not more than 48 hours when I met with Morrie Backun a highly respected Clarinet Technician from Vancouver who told me that the upper joint of this clarinet has a major crack that would only progressivle grow worse and cause "Flattening" problems, but also that the bore of the upper and lower joints WERE NOT symetrical. This revelation coming from one of the foremost authorities in making clarinets sounds their absolute best depressed me, as I face having to exchange this clarinet yet again. So my main advice is this: CAVEAT EMPTOR when buying online, and know that when you don't like the sound or the feel or the look of a particular instrument you have to go through the hassle of returning the Clarinet and playing the exchange game via UPS, FedEX or the MAIL. And don't EVER let them ship your clarinet to you via GROUND. ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS opt and be willing to pay the extra for OVERNIGHT or SECOND DAY AIR. BUT ALWAYS OPT for OVERNIGHT FIRST, becasue the weather and fewer things can effect the clarinet in transit when it is only less than 24 hours in transit. Ground means that in cold weather a clarinet will sit in the cold for hours if not days at a time and this can have adverse effects on Grenadilla wood. Trust me, I learned the hard way.

Good

Comments about Buffet Crampon R13 Professional Bb Clarinet with Silver Plated Keys:

This is a pretty good clarinet. The tone in the low and high registers are exellent. But this clarinet will not play so good if you do not treat it well.My sister played this clarinet in high school and it was passed on to me so the pads on it were old and the keys were a bit noisy. Some of the keys were a little messed up too.But that was after about 12 years. In high school I hope to get a new R-13 but I'm not sure my parents will buy it for me.This is a great horn and wonderful sound.

This clarinet is AMAZING. The intonation is awesome and it responds to everything perfectly. I use a Vandoren B45 and Vandoren Selects strength 3. and it sounds beautiful. Overall it is a wonderful clarinet, a must buy if you plan on making music for a lifetime.

Very good buy.

Comments about Buffet Crampon R13 Professional Bb Clarinet with Silver Plated Keys:

I have had my Buffet R-13 for nearly 4 years now and I haven't had to send it to the shop once. As I grew in musical ability, the clarinet grew with me, from the eigth grade until now, where I'm a High School senior preparing auditions for music schools. This clarinet has never failed me, it has always produced a beautiful tone and it fits very nicely in the fingers. Now, the only thing I have to say negatively is that my nickel plating on my keys has started wearing off, but I can only suppose that that's natural after four years of intensive playing. The Buffet may be an expensive instrument, but it is well worth the money you pay for it.

Comments about Buffet Crampon R13 Professional Bb Clarinet with Silver Plated Keys:

This horn's great. It has a clean and dark sound. Very nice. Notice that this clarinet has over 100 reviews. That means something. Buy this clarinet. It's an industry standard. You just can't go wrong with the R13.

Comments about Buffet Crampon R13 Professional Bb Clarinet with Silver Plated Keys:

I think this is a great horn. It's an industry standard; almost every professional plays this clarinet. But this is just me. There are a lot of great horns out there. Buffet, Selmer, LeBlanc, Yamaha, they all make nice horns. Try a lot before you make a decision, cuz clarinets aren't cheap....But, I think this horn sounds great for me. In my opinion, buy buy buy!

Perfect for long term musicians.

Comments about Buffet Crampon R13 Professional Bb Clarinet with Silver Plated Keys:

I got my R-13 a year ago and I love it. The lower register sounds beautiful and full. I also got the silver plated keys and they look great on stage. I highly request the Buffet R-13 for anyone thinking of making music a part of their life for a long time.

Buy the R13 Greenline instead

By Ms. Davis

from Alaska

Comments about Buffet Crampon R13 Professional Bb Clarinet with Silver Plated Keys:

I've been playing on a Buffet R-13 for 25 years. It had a few problem areas, but I adapted and tried my best. It had the sweetest tone, which people enjoyed. Recently, just for fun I tried the Buffet R-13 Greenline clarinets again. A friend has been recommending them for years, but I hadn't played on one that I liked until now. I always send my progressing students to get R-13's. I go in and try a few and then give the serial numbers to the parents and tell them to go try them. This go-around, I found the regular R-13's didn't have the resonance and customary beautiful rich tone, but the R-13 Greenlines did. Greenlines played evenly throughout the instrument and their tone was rich, warm and penetrating. The upper register played with an ease I'd never managed on my old R-13, so I had to consider upgrading! Why should my students have better playing horns than me? So I bought one and have used it for all my shows, chamber music and solos in the last couple months.I am learning to not make the tuning adjustments that were required on my old R-13, my fingers slip off the keys more because they aren't worn, and my tone is audibly different to people who have heard me play over the last 20 years. A friend and colleague came up and asked if the new warmth in my tone was from a new clarinet. I said yes! It is a darker and richer sound, more like the tone of my college instructors.I'd have to say the best part about my new R-13 Greenline is not having to "worry" about my high register intonation and voicing. The notes just come out and I can make them sing instead of shying away from them. It came in handy during a Klezmer clarinet accompaniment I played with the Alaska Children's Choir! The audience in each of the 4 performances of the piece, were highly complimentary.Long story short, R-13 is the way to go, but get a Greenline. It is less vulnerable to cracking, it plays better, and should not cost more. If it does, talk them down!

Its about the CLARINET

By Rod Robles

from Spokane

Comments about Buffet Crampon R13 Professional Bb Clarinet with Silver Plated Keys:

The R13 surpasses every single other clarinet in the market today because of its tone color..the sound is sweet and "round" . The evenness in all the 3 (or 4) registers is sublime. However the key work will seem odd if switching from a Selmer or a Yamaha or a Leblanc to this clarinet.Note: the R13 does not come with Gore-Tex pads!!!!

Good Clarinet Overall

By Gary-5Xsys

from Vancouver

Comments about Buffet Crampon R13 Professional Bb Clarinet with Silver Plated Keys:

About a month ago I bought a brand new Buffet R13 to replace my E11. Since I'm used to playing Buffets it wouldn't really feel right for me to switch to something else. The only quirks I have about Buffet is the use of nylon pins in the left hand spatula keys, a point of weakness, but overall I like Buffet's keywork design. Since I'm used to playing Buffets, the R13 tuning issues didn't really matter for me because I sub-consciously change the pitch on problematic notes. However, one must try several as each clarinet can vary dramatically even if it is the same brand and model. I would recommend staying away from clarinets that have extreme tuning issues, no matter what make or model. I tried all of the R13s in the store and the one I bought just felt right to me. The sound of the R13 is just incredible, it's a full sound with a ringing quality to it that projects nicely without distortion.
