I specialize on bari, and when I was looking for a new axe three years ago, I was determined to get the best horn I could find.. I bought the YBS62 and if I had to make the choice again, I'd do the same thing. Reasons include:1. Great sound and intonation - Intonation is perfect throughout the horn's range and the sound is versatile enough for every style of playing. Low notes sound beautifully, even at a subtone. 2. The best ergonomics available - Being able to around the LH pinky group fast is a must for section playing. This sax is a good fit even for female hands, and the spring tension is easily adjustable if you prefer lighter action. 3. Workmanship, durability, and ease of repair. Before I bought a horn I consulted two repairmen. Both recommended this sax as being very well-made and easy to work on, and it has lived up to their billing. I have it adjusted only about every 9 months or so and I rehearse/gig with it about 3-5 days a week in addition to home practice. Since bari saxes are big and tend to be temperamental, it's helpful to have one that stands up to this kind of use without complaint. Simply put. The best bari at any price!

While this bari seemed nice to me, it really didn't compare to the Rampone R1 Jazz, Yanagisawa 992, or Keilwerth SX90, all of which are cheaper than the YBS62. The Rampones and Keilwerth have HUGE bores which assist in getting massive sound that can be easily made dark or bright. The Yanagisawa 992 is made out of bronze and uses metal resos to give it the massive dark resonant sound it has. The Yamaha was nice, and I might buy it if it was 1k cheaper, but for me, it was the Keilwerth that sealed the deal.

Among the modern saxes, this is in the top 5. Intonation, smooth keywork, durability, fit and finish are all excellent.

The Best Horn Ever!

By Benjamin-flq8O

from Virginia

Comments about Yamaha YBS-62 Professional Baritone Saxophone:

My Dad ordered this beautiful instrument for me and we called up the company and ordered the horn, they called us back and said that they did not have it in stock. They said it would be about a 3 week wait because they had ordered this horn from Yamaha and it was coming across the ocean as we spoke. Well it was definitely worth the wait! when this horn came it was an absolute beauty to be hold. The action was right on time and the tone quality was beyond belief! the instrument has the capability of whispering, to barking like a dog. It is by far the best Bari on the planet today. The low A can rumble like no other and the upper-register stays in tune! All I can say about this sax is that it has it all and was very worth the wait!

wonderful

Comments about Yamaha YBS-62 Professional Baritone Saxophone:

I was a sophomore in h.s. when my school received the very very generous donation of a Yamaha 52. Prior to that I had only played on several very old, very abused horns. I switched from alto to tenor and then to bari by 7th grade. I love to play bari because of the power and the low register. I was a mediocre player and then when I got a 52 I noticed a pretty big improvement in my playing overall. At the end of my Jr. year we received a 62 and when I played it I was amazed. My sound nearly doubled compared to the older saxes and I immediately fell in love with this horn. I was almost always in tune and the tone was wonderful. I played this horn in two concert type bands, jazz band, pep band, and in pit orchestra. In every band it performed how the director wanted... Whether blasting away in pep band or quietly playing a base line when a performer was singing in a musical; the tone was great! If it were not such a valuable instrument I would have taken it with me when I graduated. I now am looking to buy a horn and I don't care about the cost of this horn because I know it is worth every cent.

Amazing Horn

By Brent

Comments about Yamaha YBS-62 Professional Baritone Saxophone:

I'm a 15 year-old high school student in Massachusetts who loves to play jazz. I play in a state award winning jazz band and I've played with the famous pro funk/soul/jazz group Tower of Power with the imfamous "Doc" who also plays this horn. For jazz, this has to be the best horn on the market and even though it's expensive, it's well worth the money. I would reccomend this sax to anyone who is willing to put in the time and effort to being a great musician.

Nice, real nice.

By BumbleBee

Comments about Yamaha YBS-62 Professional Baritone Saxophone:

I'm a bari sax player, have been all my life. I recently took my Mark VI in for an overhaul, and rented a YBS-62 to play while I was waiting for my bari. First time I played it, I was amazed. The action was just right, the tone was even in all registers, and the lower register produced a bigger sound than my Mark VI ever could. Then I noticed that this sax had some leaks, and was amazed that even with some leaks, I could produce such a monstrous sound. The very day I got my Mark VI back, I sold it and used the money to buy a YBS-62.

YBS-62

By AJL

Comments about Yamaha YBS-62 Professional Baritone Saxophone:

I test played 5 horns. I felt the best sound came from the Yamaha. It also had the beefiest low-A mechanism. The placement of the high-F# is helpful to me. Register transition is smooth and easy with the 3 hole octave system. Great sax, definitely worth the money.

Awesome Sax

By Jonathan King

from east of San Francisco, CA

Comments about Yamaha YBS-62 Professional Baritone Saxophone:

I'm a serious 16 year old high school bari (only) player who finally got his own horn. As you can imagine, I examined TONS of options when choosing the sax that I plan to play the rest of my life. I tried everything from Selmer to Jupiter to Cannonball to Yamaha and even to an old Selmer marc five(as well as others). After examining all options available within 100 miles of my house in the San Francisco area and there were a lot of options, I decided on the YBS-62. The Yamaha 52 and 62 are by far the most sturdy horns on the mainstream market. They are both built with much higher quality than say a Cannonball, where pads are melted on instead of glued (which makes them near impossible to replace). The YBS has an awesome concert tone even with the mediocre mouthpiece it comes with. But, with a change in mouthpiece and ligature, that sax will sing like no other. This instrument also does well in jazz when applied with a new mouthpiece. I am a fan of the Meyer. It will provide you with as sharp of a tone as you want. Other "pro-level" horns from Cannonball, Yanagisawa, Selmer-BUNDY, Jupiter, don't even come close to the quality and sound of the Yamaha. The only close competitor to this horn is the Selmer-Paris pro horn(VERY different from Selmer-BUNDY). I love the YBS-62 and would recommend it to any serious player!

Comments about Yamaha YBS-62 Professional Baritone Saxophone:

I love this horn! I have played about 20 different baris in my life, and none compare to the the YBS-62. I got the horn in my freshman year of high school. I am sure it will be my only horn!
