My friends has the smaller version of the 401 in a 201 version. It doesn't have the 20 decibel boost but its crazy. The crunch has a beautiful tone thats is high and crisp with a perfect amount of warmth, which makes it awesome for blues or metallica. The clean is nice and deep which can pull off the awesome melodys. The El 84s do a awesome job and there are 4 of them loaded into it and so far they have lasted for about 2 years now and it hasn't been in the shop yet so thats a good sign. The DSLs are very versatile amps there are so many things you can do on it and they all end up sounding amazing from drop tuning, solos, melodys, harmonics and anything you can throw at it. Pretty much Fender plus Marshall is the best combination, so give this amp a try and you will fall in love with it. It is well worth the money. It is better than any Fender amp and works extremely well with a POD XT

Maybe my expectations were unrealistic, however I really disliked the clean sound. I know Marshalls are for people who love great natural sounding distortion. It does deliver a fantastic overdriven/distortion sound at all volume levels. The clean settings sounded "solid state" and "tight" with little or no warmth. I also had trouble getting adequate volume when playing clean. My unit was purchased as an open box and had a defective reverb unit so maybe there were other things wrong with it as well. I exchanged the unit for a Fender Hot Rod Deville with 4-10's.

All you will need!!

By

This amp cranks!! 40 watts sounds like a hundred after I plug it into my Marshall 4x12 cabinet. Keeps the sound quality even if you turn it all the way up!!! Nothing comes close for the price.

Great amp, a little too much money

By

from Sayreville

I have been playing for two years. I play a 05 American Telecaster which is a fantastic guitar. I have had both of these pieces of gear for 3 and a half months now. This combo produces great twang and good rhythm. I like the clean channel to practice on. (isn't as clean as a Fender, but very good) It gives great twang for country or blues. The distortion channel is good tube Marshall overdrive, but if you practice in your room with the OD you may be disappointed. To see the real monster of an amp it is you have to crank the amp up. I played a gymnasium with it with my band and it sounded phenomenal. I didn't even have to put it up to 10. When I get enough money I would be very interested in getting the 100 watt head. I also like the feature that you can put a cabinet into it to get louder for bigger places. Overall, I think the amp is great for all levels of playing. I also recommend the Fender DeVille for great clean tones. Great Marshall tube overdrive.

Great Sound - Not Dependable

By

from Houston, TX

I love the sound of this amp, both clean and dirty, but I have had nothing but problems with this amp. First a capacitor, then a preamp problem . . . It must not be able to handle to much travel.I would say it is great practice amp, but you better buy large and press for dependability if you are playing a lot. It is so disappointing to get the sound you want and the band is kicking and then the thing crashes on you.

This One Is Hot

I have been a musician for better than 20 years and I have used them all Fender,Marshall,Peavey,Vox etc. But this little amp is all Marshall. You turn this little puppy about 1/2 way up and throw a Sure SM57 on it and push a bit of that sound out the mains and you have that sound that you want.

Great sound and compact.

Great little heavy metal amp. 40 Watts really sounds like 75. I mean loud. I bought this for bedroom use and you can easily hear what I'm playing three houses away from the street with the amp just at 7. You can drown out any drummer.

40 watts of tube and celestion speaker is all you will ever need unless if you want to look cool then you get a 4x12
