Stay away from tube amps and pick up the SansAmp RBI.
Comments about Tech 21 Sansamp RBI Rackmount Bass Tube Amp Emulator:
Well nothing is going to sound like a real tube amp, of course. But if you want solid-state reliability, in 1 rack space, and still get a tube sound, then the SansAmp RBI is a good investment.
It's great for recording. And if you listen to the playback, you can't tell the difference between the SansAmp and a real tube amp.
For live gigs, I run it thru the effects loop of the SWR SM-900. I found that the bass control on the SansAmp is "stronger" than the bass control of the SWR. And when I have to run into the PA, I run a cable out of the SWR's tuner-out, into the SansAmp, and then run the SansAmp's XLR into the mixer or stage snake.
It has a dedicated presence control for extra highs. But I keep it a third of the way up so it doesn't sound so bright.
To get that "tube crunch" sound, I turn up the drive control about half way.
I found that if you turn the blend control all the way up, it eliminates the "bass twang" a little bit and gives you a subtle sound. So I keep the blend about two-thirds of the way up. But the more you turn up the blend, the more of an SVT sound you get.
What would really top this unit off is if it had a real pre-amp tube inside of it. It's very versatile.

Awesome!
Comments about Tech 21 Sansamp RBI Rackmount Bass Tube Amp Emulator:
If your looking for good, solid, professional bass tone this is it. The only problem is, once I used it I never wanted to play without it again! It dishes out rich, fat tube tone. From vintage Ampeg SVT or Fender Bassman tones to more modern Tool-ish tones. It also brings out a lot of dynamics to your playing. Things that tend to get swallowed up by the band. I actually have to learn to play "lighter" because of it. I finally found the tone I had in my head. And it's so painfully easy to use it's scary.
