Hi-res headphones with professional analog music to digital conversion.

Take your digital music collection to another level with Sony's MDR-1A high-resolution stereo headphones. By converting analog music to digital at a higher rate than CD (24 bit/192 kHz, rather than 16 bit/44.1 kHz), High-Resolution Audio gets you closer to the original studio master recording so you can enjoy your music just as the artist intended. Powerful 1.57 in HD drivers with large vents allow the headphones to deliver punchy, rhythmic bass on even the most demanding track. A light but rigid aluminum-coated liquid crystal polymer diaphragm responds quickly to reproduce vocals and mid-high range notes with intense clarity. Turn up the volume and hear clear, precise sound across the spectrum.

The wide frequency range—spanning 3 Hz to 100 kHz—is designed for today’s broad variety of music styles. The 3 Hz low end of the frequency range offers more than enough latitude for even the deepest sub-bass notes. At the 100 kHz high-end, you’ll be able to enjoy vocal melodies, subtle audio harmonics and tonality, giving your music more life and realism. With a high sensitivity of 105dB/mW, these headphones are highly efficient in converting electricity into acoustic signals. This means you hear clearer sound across the entire audio spectrum (compared to less sensitive headphones) when listening to music through the same source and at the same volume. An aluminum-coated, liquid crystal polymer diaphragm produces more consistent and precise sound across the entire frequency range compared with conventional LCP drivers. Sound energy lost during transmission to the headphone housing is more uniform for a true and authentic performance. Also enjoy a flatter frequency response, even when listening to the ultrahigh frequencies in High-Resolution Audio. Precisely sculpted vents maximize the airflow in the headphone, allowing the LCP diaphragm to breathe more easily and deliver an instant response to powerful low-end bass lines.

The closed-back, enfolding design wraps around the ear, sealing in music and keeping out distractions. Acoustics are reflected back toward your ears, so you hear even the subtlest sounds. You also feel every beat, as the closed-back design maximizes the bass signatures in your music. With a balanced four-wire connection and silver-copper dual cord, audio channel separation is improved for better sound. Unlike conventional headphones, which share a ground wire, the cord includes left, right, and independent ground wires for both channels, so you hear less distortion and crosstalk. Soft leather earpads with pressure-relieving cushions, designed to rise and shape around your ears for a comfortable fit. Smooth materials and seamless stitching provide a harmonious mix of comfort and durability for long hours of listening. Take these headphones anywhere you go. A swivel folding design makes it easy to store them when not in use or while traveling. The earcups swivel flat to slip easily into a suitcase or bag.

Amazing clarity!

Comments about MDR-1A Sony Premium Hi-Res Stereo Headphones:

These are absolutely the most amazing headphones I have ever used or owned. They truly knock it out of the park in all aspects. -Sound quality is incredible. Everything sounds so clear and crisp that I can't imagine my music sounding much better. Clear bass with great mids and treble. I love that the sound is very neutral, as not one aspect is emphasized over the other. I use these with the Walkman music player in my Sony Xperia Z3 phone (which plays Hi-Res music), and the listening experience is unreal. Also, the DSEE HX ability in the Z3 makes all of my iTunes purchased music sound as good as they possibly can. I also own the Sony MDR-XB950BT and while great headphones in their own right, are not as clear and accurate in comparison to the MDR-1A (the MDR-XB950BT's are better for energy and loudness, such as music in the gym). -These are also the most amazingly comfortable headphones I have ever used. I wire-framed glasses, and have always struggled to find on-ear and over-ear headphones that haven't pushed the glasses into the sides of my head. With the MDR-1As, they fit well and allow me to move my glasses around with no problems. These headphones are also incredibly light, too. They are as light as on-ear headphones that you can buy for $10-20, but still feel like the premium headphones that they are. They are made with high-quality, top-notch materials. Also included is a very nice carrying pouch, a cable for smartphone control with a mic, all in a very beautiful box. To conclude, I feel that these are well worth the $300 price tag, because of the overall package of sound quality, build quality, and attractive appearance. If you are debating to get these or the MDR-1Rs, I would say spend the extra money to get these because of the various improvements, and for the peace of mind that you are getting the absolute best version.

Sony MDR-1A

Comments about MDR-1A Sony Premium Hi-Res Stereo Headphones:

I just have upgraded from my old Sony ZX-600 On-Ears. I wanted a nice pair of over ears and I just decided that the flagship would be a good idea. I was going to get the Sony MDR-1R in the first place then the 1A got released with the Silver color option in the US. So I decided that I would buy these. Waited 'till Christmas to give them to myself. I'll start with the box. It was very nice looking, and the black sleeve that slid out of the retail box was very nice. The box opened to show the the headphones stilling on a pile of black cloth. Under the felt lid was the bag that contained the stock cables (Phone remote and normal cable). I was surprised to see the warranty card was laminated in plastic! Overall, very classy. Now the build quality. I got mine in the silver color and they were very nice to look at. The leather is really soft and very plush. The headband is light but thick and you can't feel it on your head. There are two polished metal pieces on the sides that display the model number. The ear pads fit my ears exactly right, I do have small ears. So if you just fit the 1R's then the 1A's may be a tight squeeze. The bass ports are large and have a chrome piece, though the actual port inside of them is very small. The wire piece is on the left, which I felt was awkward because I am used to using the right side. The cables that are included feel very high quality and don't tangle. They are wrapped very loosely in the water resistant bag so they do not maintain the wrapped shape. The actual drivers are very large and do not distort any part of the audio, even at high volume levels. Which my ZX600s suffered from. The mids are a little far away it feels, but they are very clear. The highs are very nice and as these headphones have a crazy range, I expect they would. The bass is the best part, punchy, but low bass lines don't break up the highs and because the drivers are very nice and large. I really enjoy these headphones for music or long-term gaming. They are very comfortable. Overall, they are a very nice pair of headphones and the quality, sound and presentation represent the price tag. Side notes: I used a Sony VAIO FIT 14A and a Sony Xperia Z1 for the audio testing.
