Let me start off by saying that this is the mic for live purposes. Use it on anything, it will sound good. I've even rigged them to mic bass amps and bass drums live, but for the life of me, I couldn't get this thing to sound worth a recording. It produces the same sound as a karaoke mic. The only way I feel I could streamline the sound is if I pumped it through a preamp. For live purposes, this is the mic to have. But for recording, I'm afraid condensers are the only thing worth their recorded gold.

Great mic to record drums,amps,just about anything.Its built like a tank,and is virtually indestructible.You can't go wrong with having a couple of SM57's in your mic locker.

You can never really have too many SM57's around. I've used them for everything from vocals to acoustic guitar, drums, etc, etc. You really haven't experienced what these mics can do though, until you run them through a top quality preamp, like a John Hardy M-1.
If you're going to have one dynamic to cover a lot of bases successfully, this is the one to have.

I got my first one in '98. It's been through a lot and traveled many miles but I've never had any problems with it. These are tough, durable and worth more than they cost. Once you buy one you never have to replace it!
You can record absolutely anything with them. However, since they are unidirectional I would not recommend using one for a good "room" sound. If you need crisp highs or deep lows then this mic won't do that but that's not what it's for. Guitars and drums sound great with SM57's. Vocals come out good too but there are better mics for recording vocals. Same with kick drums, cymbals and horns. Still, you can get great tones on a recording using nothing but an SM57. There probably aren't very many professional band recordings without an SM57 being utilized somewhere on it.
I love when the sound guy mics my cabinet with a 57. I prefer one for my vocals too (backups, not lead).
SM57's are the undisputed workhorse of mics and everyone should have at least one.

I have had this mic for a year or so and it always delivers. It is incredible for vocals and for instruments to. I have mic'ed a bassoon with this thing. This is overall the greatest mic I have ever used. If microphones took over the world, this would be their leader.

I have 2 of these. I could use a 3rd (at least!)The SM57 has a great live and recording history that goes back a couple of rock and roll generations. This mic has been proven time and time again. I love it on loud guitar amps and drums in particular. I've been using them to record and for live stuff. The SM57 delivers edgy rock, Metal and R & B guitar sounds with the characteristics that I and so many through history have sought. I also like to use it as a second mic to a separate track if I'm trying to get a smoother guitar sound with a cardoid mic, but I want it to have some teeth and extra brightness. Two close mics right in the center of different speakers is the way I do it.

Let me start by saying that Shure has made an amazing mic in the sm57. Its incredibly versatile...a great "go to" mic to get fat guitar tone, and deep bass. Also sounds awesome on snare and toms (although for cymbals, you'll want condemners) it does a fair job on vocals if you don't have access to a condenser. It can handle REALLY loud live volumes, too as I've used them many times in this application without problem. I've had it for quite a while with heavy use and have had nothing go wrong with it. I have more than one and if either was stolen I would replace them the next day (after I stopped crying), no doubt. If that isn't the true mark of a great product, I don't know what is...if you could have only one mic, this is it!!

I own two SM-57's for studio and live work. My recording engineer settles for nothing less than this Shure model. Crisp acoustic guitar pick-up is excellent since I am against "electrifying" my pristine Gibson AJ acoustic. For pick-up on my Vox tube amps, the recording reproduction makes my Les Pauls, SG, and Strat TRUE sounding with absolutely no background noise. We mic the drums with SM-57's as well; REALLY PICKS UP THE SNARE SOMETHING AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

Had a Shure PG58 which I was using for vocals. However, it seemed to cut out a lot of bass frequencies so my voice sounded flat. I decided to try out the SM57, half expecting little improvement and was quite astounded by the results. I then recorded my acoustic guitar which had the clarity in the recording of an electro-acoustic.I would definitely recommend this mic to anyone and actively discourage people from buying cheaper mics- the difference is quality is far, far greater than the difference in price!!!

Anybody remember Leslie Tone Cabinets? If you play through one, you know you gotta keep up with the guitar amps. It's easy; mic the top and bottom with SM57s. You'll get the pure sound of those rotors moving that air, only real loud. Beautiful!
