Special attention has been paid to the phasing plug assembly with equally placed ports that sense audio from behind, entering them out of phase. Got this a few months ago and have been messing and gigging with it a lot. I am fairly new to the live music scene so don't have a ton of experience with a lot of mics but have been reading and listening to all I can.
I am a member of an Irish punk band (think Pogues, Tossers, etc.) and am their whistle player and do a bit of singing and sax stuff. Loud on-stage SPLs make off-axis rejection pretty important (two guitar players who "need" tube amps and volume for "tone" don't help!), since I play what are by a verrrry long shot the quietest instruments on stage. I play with the mic up fairly high, pointed down at a 45-degree angle, with my upper lip just touching the basket for maximum volume without the actual whistle blowing air up to the capsule.
I own a Shure Beta57a also and did a lot of comparisons with whistle and found that the PR-22 was much nicer on the top end ... a bit more open sound in higher frequency ranges. I have also used my PR-22 to mic one of my bandmate's guitar cabs for a demo and found it very pleasant, though I did not do a head-to-head vs the Beta57a.
At a gig recently, I did my a cappella song with one of the band's Shure SM58's and really liked the Shure, which led me to do some more vocal and sax testing of the PR 22 at home versus the Beta57a. With the mic straight into an Electro-Voice ELP112x powered speaker, I find that the PR22 has an unpleasant stuffiness to it somewhere in the upper mids ... it just doesn't sound like my voice or a sax sound that I would really want amplified. The Beta57a just seems more natural with my voice and my sax. This, if course, is without any EQ and I'm no mixing-console wizard, so it's entirely possible that I could tweak it to make it beautiful. But if you're doing the "guitar and voice in a coffee house" thing with no mixing board, I don't think this is the right mic.
I am with a lot of people in that I really want to be excited about an American-"assembled" product, and I look forward to trying the PR-30 and PR-35, but I am finding that, for my voice, I'm just not a fan of the PR-22. Wouldn't hesitate to mic a guitar cab with them, though.
It's probably worth your while to read up on Heil's "The Fin" reviews where you can find them ... they have the same capsule as the PR-22, as I understand it. Haven't tried it, but I know there's fancier bands than mine that just love their Fins.
