The Focusrite Saffire PRO 26 I/O is the ideal FireWire interface for music-recording enthusiasts on a mobile multichannel mission. It provides more inputs and outputs with higher performance specs than any other interface in its class. You get eight award-winning preamps with sixteen channels of ADAT, and two channels of SPDIF (up to 192kHz) backed up by Focusrite's high-performance, 24-bit digital converters.

Saffire PRO 26 I/O is much more than just a high performance breakout box; the Saffire PRO package includes Focusrite's highly acclaimed Saffire plug-in suite, comprising EQ, Compression, Amp Simulation and Reverb, in both VST and AU format. The hardware features 2 headphones outputs and a global monitor control with mute and dim options, as well as two 'super channels' featuring variable mic impedance and instrument input, instantly accessible on the front panel.

The preamps featured in Saffire PRO 26 I/O are a derivative of the award-winning Green Series. This preamp design upholds the same high-bandwidth philosophy while boasting class-leading specifications. In addition, the converters adhere to performance specifications far beyond other similarly priced interfaces. As with all Saffire solutions, the unit can be either bus-powered or powered via an external power supply. The unit has also been designed to take full advantage of the external power supply and to maximize performance when powered in this way.

SaffireControl PRO software delivers a control application that avoids any annoying dropdown menus and provides comprehensive custom mix solutions. It also offers quick-select 'tracking' and 'playback' solutions, as well as both the float and shrink/expand facilities found in the original.

Saffire Pro 26 I/O also features MIDI I/O alongside a host of additional processing features. Two channels with DI are also provided, eliminating the need for a separate DI box.

Focusrite’s popular Saffire Firewire interfaces are fully compatible with Thunderbolt ports on Mac computers. All you need to connect the two is a FireWire 400-800 cable (included with all new Saffire interfaces later this year) and the Thunderbolt to FireWire 800 adapter (not included). Simply plug this into the Thunderbolt port on your computer and connect the FireWire interface – it’s as simple as that. Saffire interfaces are 100% compatible with Thunderbolt using this adaptor.

Best sounding, most forgiving preamps I've ever used, and then some

After years of recording to various formats, I have had the opportunity to audition many units high and low. This unit blows everything away up to twice the price range. It's like getting three units in one. You get ultra stable, low jitter a/d converters combined with eight high quality preamps, and two independant headphone outs. The preamps are the easiest I've worked with. They have a HUGE sweet spot that leaves you tons of headrooms for transients. That, to me, is one of the core requirements for getting tracks that sing, and the Focusrite preamps don't dissapoint. The combination of xlr inputs in back and trs input on front, make this a highly flexible unit for the home studio, where space may be tight. I've been using mine non-stop for about a year now and have had no issues with it at all. The build quality is excellent (and I'm hard to please on that one). Everything functions as flawlessly as it did the day I bought it. Nothing in this price range competes with the quality and reliablity of this unit.

Almost Famous

I purchased the Focusrite Saffire PRO 26 I/0 to replace an aging M-Audio Delta 1010. My main priorities were moving from a PCI-based interface to Firewire, and having great mic pres. This was before some other studio heavyweight names like Apogee started to enter this market, and the Saffire PRO proved to be a great value and performer. I believe it still is. I've recorded one of my bands' CDs and several other projects and demos with it, as the front end into Logic. The rack unit only has peak LEDs, no level meters on the input channels, nor in the software, which does make level setting a bit of a guessing game. Basically you just keep the channel from peaking on the unit, and look at the record level you're getting in the DAW. Seems like an oversight for such an otherwise well-engineered piece of hardware. That said, once I got used to it, I never had a problem with digital overs. The only other glitch I experience is that sometimes my unit forgets its sampling rate setting, with no indication besides any audio output becomes complete digital gibberish. I haven't seen any other mention of this anywhere, so it might just be me. Overall, I'm very happy with the Saffire. While I do expect to move on to better outboard mic pres someday, this unit will be in the setup for a good while.

Pros - price, 8 near colorless preamps all with high pass filters, two independent headphone outs. Cons - support via the U.K. only, no meters (just clip lights), poorly designed user interface, only two inserts.
