Warmth and accuracy for your condenser mics!
With the Electro-Harmonix 12AY7 Tube Microphone Preamp, Electro-Harmonix offers an affordable tube micrphone preamp that won't disappoint. Equipped with a 12AY7 EH tube and a 12AU7 EH driver, it gives microphones the widest dynamic range with the warmest possible tone and accuracy. The 12AY7 Mic Pre uses an actual 200V supply instead of the "faked out" 12 or 48 volts you'd get with common models and delivers 50dB of gain into a high impedance load or 40dB gain into 600 ohms.
The 12AY7 Mic Preamp's special FET current-balancing circuit allows the tubes to amplify the microphone signal to line level while eliminating noise and protecting against hum and hostile electrical environments. It has an extra TRS output for separate line control, which can be used as a splitter or an aux send for monitoring. Input connections are balanced in and out (XLR) with a 1/4" TRS balanced buffer out. The Electro-Harmonix mic pre unit also boasts a phase reverse switch and a +4dBm indicator light for setting optimal mic level. The 48V phantom power is soft starting and pop-free.

Electro-Harmonix Mic Pre 12AY7 - I get no hum. Wtf, people?
Comments about Electro-Harmonix 12AY7 Tube Microphone Preamp:
GET NO HUM! Get a better transformer or use adapters that cleans your buildings dirty power grid. Tubes are sensitive equipment.
I use the American transformer in Norway, together with a 110v to 230v 50W converter transformer (not expensive at all). Another thing, EH says that their transformer doesn't work in Germany because they only have 220V and not 230V.
I think this little thing is awesome. But I like my GA Project Pre-73 better, because it has a more full sound. That is just a matter of taste, I guess. Trafo-sound vs tube. Its like compairing Nirvana vs Beatles.

HUMSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS when pluged Into an Unbalanced input
Comments about Electro-Harmonix 12AY7 Tube Microphone Preamp:
If this preamp plugs into anything unbalanced, it will HUM...like an unbalanced audio interface, rca inputs, a FMR RNC, RNLA, a DBX 163x compressor, anything with an unbalanced input...it will hummmmm
If this preamp is pluged into anything balanced, it will not HUM and will sound clean and fantastic...
You will need a balanced audio interface, a Balanced PA, a Balanced compressor input for it to work without that dull HUMMMMMM
Once you use you a balanced compressor or whatever then after the compreoor can be unbalanced and no hum...
...with this design, it doesnt deserve anything above a 3 star review

Just too noisy
Comments about Electro-Harmonix 12AY7 Tube Microphone Preamp:
Great idea, but way too much noise to be usable for either live or recording. Maybe mine was a lemon, but if so it doesn't speak well for EH's quality control. I tried it in my PA & multi track recorder - in both cases the noise level was extreme. I'm not talking background hum here, it had a loud buzz. Needless to say, I returned it.
