Comments about Chauvet Obey 40 DMX Lighting Controller:

I use this controller to run our band's light show consisting of 12 par 64 RGB leds and two 4-channel control boxes for non dmx lights. I access a bank/scene via midi note sent by my drum pads (Roland SPD-S). In Auto mode it will cycle through each scene in the Bank you are currently in (8 Scenes per bank). For each Scene (240 total), you can program length of time to show the scene, and the fade speed (into the next Scene). Note that out of 30 possible Banks, only the first 15 are midi accessible.

The Roland pad does not have 'Latch' mode (note ON without note Off) so the Obey 40 interprets it as two note sends. This prevents me from accessing Chases (up to 240 Scenes strung together), but works fine in the O40's Auto mode for Scenes/Banks. I've read that people use a Behringer midi pedal to run this to great effect, so I assume the Behringer can send in Latch mode.

The controller will freeze up at the slightest zap of static electricity (like if you're working on carpeting in the winter) and has to be turned off for 5 seconds to reset. Sometimes it will lose some Scene settings if you were in Program mode at the time.

It has the flexibility of re-assigning sliders to different dmx channel control (for different fixtures) and even inverting the slider direction (up/down to down/up control). No joystick means it may be difficult to set up moving fixture programs when we get them. The next Obey model higher has the joystick.

The Music (sound activated) function is very sensitive (non adjustable) but ignores every other beat.

I wouldn't recommend this one to manually run a light show unless you're very creative on how you set up scenes and use manual control of the Speed setting. Neither inituitive nor easy for manual/realtime use.

The Chauvet tech people were easily reachable and very helpful.
