Because the felt muffling "floats" and does not touch the bearing edge, the drum head collar is free to vibrate in unison with the drum shell to preserve the low end.

Comments about Aquarian Articulator Bass Drum Head:
Attention pipe band Tenor Drummers:
If you are in need of new heads for your tenor drums, then this is the one I recommend. The Articulator by Aquarian is a fantastic head. Its quality is second to none. It is made from a nice thick film, stretched nicely into a metal hoop. Attached to the under-side of the head, is a white foam ring dampener, about 1 inches wide. This is well-engineered, in that it does exactly what the maker intended.
I was given one of these head, new in the box. The pipe band that bought it ordered the wrong size, but just kept. I recently bought a pair of vintage (NEW) Premier tenor drums. The drums were great; the heads were crap. It sounded like you were beating on a garbage can. The band said I could just have the head, if it fit. And fit it did. The drum now has a beautiful tone, one worthy of a Premier!
NOTE: This is listed as an American-style Bass Drum head. Scottish Tenor Drums are larger than normal tenor drums. So, this style bass drum head is a perfect fit.
