Poor Tone, Poor Balance, Nice Size, Nice Neck
Comments about Martin Steel-String Backpacker Acoustic Guitar:
I've had the Martin Steel String Backpacker for about 3 years, and I'll admit that the small size makes it very portable. The neck is nice - well shaped and with an excellent fret board. I'm done with the good.
Ultimately, you want a guitar that you like the sound of, right? I just can't get over the sort of vague 'banjo' sound. Nothing against a banjo, but I bought a guitar. So that's a big ratings dropper for me. Next is the 'balance' - the neck is quite heavy relative to the body, so the guitar's neck wants to dive for the floor at all times. It's a bit more manageable with the strap, but awkward.
I suppose I'd suggest trying one out before buying to see what you think, but if I had to do over - I'd probably opt for something a wee bit bigger that sounds a ton better.

I love it!
Comments about Martin Steel-String Backpacker Acoustic Guitar:
I've had my backpacker for a couple weeks now and I'm really enjoying it. It's a fine practice guitar and I'll be traveling with it over the next few months and look forward to having it for companionship. It's a quality instrument, not a toy. Everything nicely put together. The fretwork is excellent and the tone is considerably better than what you would expect. It's really a fine sounding blues guitar and the volume level is perfect for solo practicing. I've been watching March Madness with my backpacker. It's really a perfect tv watching guitar, which is truly great practice time. This is a keeper, very worthy of the Martin name (I also own a Martin 000-16S and 1968 D12-20 12-string along with a 1968 Gibson Dove and other acoustic and electrics too numerous to list). I couldn't be happier with my Backpacker.
