Comments about Martin DXME Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I do not often write reviews but felt compelled to write this one after purchasing the DXME. I was amazed, to say the least, with my entry-level Martin. The DXME is a solid, well-built guitar that offers a lot of tone for a guitar in its price range.
Opening the box, you immediately see the attention to detail that Martin is known for. My instrument arrived impeccably well-packaged in protective materials. My guitar looked fantastic strait out of the box. The construction and finish on this guitar was flawless. This was surprising considering it is a lower-end model and made in the Sonora, Mexico plant. It was nice to see that a great amount of care and detail was given to this line and not just the higher range lines (as other companies do). There is no question that quality control is a high priority to Martin.
I am very picky when it comes to buying guitars and I always inspect my purchases carefully upon arrival. Upon closer inspection under direct and indirect light, I could not find a single scratch, blemish, or flaw on the finish of the guitar. Running my fingers along the sides of the neck and frets, I could not discern any sharp points, dents, or uncomfortable parts; the neck along its entire length and all its sides was perfectly smooth. My only gripe, and I am being nit-picky, is that there is a minuscule triangular-shaped gap below the finger board where the beveled edge of the top does not meet the edge of the neck. I found the set up of the DXME to be perfect straight out of the box-- no fret buz, perfect string height, no tuning issues.
For those who do not know, the DXME guitar body is made of HPL and is not tone wood. Most of the negative reviews for this guitar are from people who did not know they were buying a laminated guitar. The idea of not using solid tone wood may be sacrilege to the Martin Purist, but in all fairness the HPL does have some redeeming qualities. It is ecologically friendly, which is increasingly important as the world supply of tone woods continues to be threatened. HPL is also a very sturdy and tough material and can be very forgiving of occasional bumps and accidents.
Aesthetically, the look of HPL may not be the most popular. From a distance the DXME may appear to be solid wood. Up close however the satin look and feel of the HPL may remind you of kitchen counter-top Formica or the vinyl wood panels that were ounce popular on station wagons. As far as appointments this guitar is fairly simple- it is a working man's instrument, a daily work horse--nothing fancy (doesn't even come with a case). The DXME does come with an attractive tortoise pick guard and an elegant gold herringbone pattern Rossette. In its simplicity however, there is an understated beauty and minimalist aesthetic that many may find appealing.
Other innovative materials that merit mention is the stratabond neck and black richlite fingerboard and bridge. Stratabond is a material made of laminated sheets of wood. It is not new and has been used extensively in the firearms industry. Stratabond has a unique look which you either love or hate. I was skeptical the first time I saw it. Looks aside however, it feels really, really nice. The stratabond neck on my DXME is one the smoothest necks I've ever played. The low profile oval shape, satin finish, and 1-11/16" nut make it a super easy to play guitar. It is also worth noting that statabond has a stronger tensile strength than solid wood making it more resistant to bowing and warping.
Black richlite is a material made in part from compressed recycled paper and phenolic resin. The black richlite saddle and fingerboard on the DXME have a matte/satin plastic-like appearance. I did not like the material at first, but have since changed my opinion. Despite the resin/plastic-like appearance, the material has a wood-like feel which to some may be reminiscent of ebony. I found the feel of the richlite fingerboard to be surprisingly comfortable. The silky smooth feel of the richlite make the DMXE fingerboard super friendly and easy to play.
To my delight the DXME came equipped with very nice electronics. This model comes with the Fishman Presyn Plus with tuner. There are controls for volume, bass, middle, treble, notch, brilliance, and phase. There is also a low battery led light and of course a chromatic tuner. For reasons that only Chris Martin knows, the DXME's electronics have more features and versatility than many of the more expensive Martin models.
So now the big question, how does it sound? For being a HPL guitar, the DXME has a surprisingly rich tone. The classic Martin tone is there, reproduced in all its glory, punchy and responsive with fat lows and bright highs. The guitar resonates a surprising amount, even producing subttle vibrations along the guitar's neck and in your fingers. It does not project as loud as its more expensive siblings, but still there is plenty of tone to appreciate. Is it the solid Sitka x-patterned bracing, the SP lifespan strings, or the black foil Martin label inside that makes it sound good to me? I don't know, but the DXME sounds better than it should. Collectively, the unorthodox materials and innovative design come together to produce something unexpectedly great.

Martin DXME

By Michael-7GG1-

from Milpitas, CA

Comments about Martin DXME Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Great guitar, especially for the price. Action is perfect, slim neck, great deep tone as on all Martin Guitars. This guitar is an affordable Martin. The tone is super similar to the tone of those on $2000 Martins. The projection is a little quieter than the expensive Martin's but you can just plug it in. Overall, best purchase ever!

By jay

Comments about Martin DXME Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I know this guitar has the spruce grained top, and this guitar sounds awesome! The sound is very brilliant and clear. This guitar has great acoustical sound and has very good bass and low-end sounds. The electronics on this guitar also sound great. It sounds just like how you would expect it to sound when plugged in, or maybe even better. So overall, in sound and quality, I'd highly recommend it!
