Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5120 Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

This is my second Gretsch. I had a 5129 that was stolen in a burglary and that was a wonderful guitar. Since it is no longer made I replaced it with the 5120. Both were/are amazing. Fell in love with the Gretsh sound listening to Chet and Duane. I play for my own pleasure to have something to do. I also own a Fender Stratocaster Standard American and an Epiphone Wildkat LTD but the Gretsch is by far the sweetest of them all

    Love This Guitar!

    By Dan McR

    from Undisclosed

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5120 Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

This is the first hollowbody I have owned. Most of my life I played acoustic only, and just in the last 5 years bought a Strat, then a Godin solid body electric. The G5120 has a unique voice that's unlike anything I've played before. It is a kick to play, and is very versatile. I play in a band at church where we cover a wide variety of styles. The Gretsch seems to work for just about everything short of a real metal tone. It can sound very acoustic, clean electric, and (with effects) comfortable in rock and blues. I have found that coupled with a multi-effects pedal it's a great jack-of-all trades guitar. The Bigsby adds a whole different flavor, though I'm still learning when/how to use it.

The neck and string spacing make it great for fingerstyle playing as well. My only real complaint is that it wanders out of tune easily - possibly the tuners or just inherent in having a Bigsby.

I strongly recommend getting it set up professionally. I set the floating bridge myself the first time following instructions on You-Tube, but didn't know how to set the action. I was way sharp up the neck. Intonation and action are much better after paying to have a pro set it up.

All in all, I highly recommend this guitar.

    Gretsch 5120 Review

    By William Sarris

    from Undisclosed

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5120 Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

A while ago I purchesed a Gretsch 5120 and case from Music 123. I really didn't know what to expect. I have been playing "wood" music since the 60s. I've had a Gibson J-50, Gibson J-200, a Martin D-35 ( Brazilian Rosewood!) and now a Taylor 814CE. Right or wrong, the Taylor is the guitar I compair all others to.
I never cared for electric music. When the the Gretsch arrived, I was really impressed with the overall quality of the guitar. Really good fit and finish. Playing it unplugged, the acustic sound was right on, intonation great!
Finally had a chance to try it amped. My son had a Peavey Vypyr 75. At first, the sound was horrible because I did not know how to adjust the amp settings. I almost gave up and went bact to Wood Music. Then I stumbled on to a setting that changed everything. I went bach to playing everyday for at least half hour or longer, my playing ability increased. I started to listen to old rock and roll music from the 60s forwards. The guitar sings as good as my old Brazilian rosewood martin did at 2 in the morning when the whole world is asleep and you can hear the guitar ring clear and sustain almost for ever.
My son is a music producer. I have used the Gretsch on several tracks for commercials and for several artists. Everyone who hears it loves the sound that comes out of it. I can make it twang for country, mute/flat, ring, for pop, and I can't even describe the sound for blues. I am not at the oplace musically where I can make it cry or sing, but I am getting there.

The Gretsch is just as good but in a different part in the realm of music.
If you are interested in a hollow body that you can play sessions for Country, Folk, Blues, Pop, Rap, and Techno, this may just be your ticket. Don't allow anyone to shoe horn you into thinking that you have to play a such and such to get the right sound. The sound comes from you soul, not from your instament. What you need the instament for is to transition the sound from your soul to the speaker. The Grestch 5120 is a vehicle that will take you there. You know what the great thing about this is? It doesn't really matter how old or how young you are? What matters is the music!

    Best Guitar Bargain Anywhere

By Red Hot Jammer in LA

    from Lecompte, LA

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5120 Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Beautifully crafted and finished, this is not a Gretsch knockoff. The action is terrific, smooth and easy to play. The tone is awesome - country or blues will bring tears to your eyes, and it crunches out power in any rock style. If you ever wanted that unique Gretsch sound, but didn't believe you could afford it, BUY THIS! It's my favorite guitar of any I have ever owned.

    Good Tone, Great Value

    By Trevor-C.kij

    from Newport News, VA

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5120 Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I picked up a Gretsch 5120 last summer in pursuit of a guitar that had a full-bodied sound with a little bit of twang mixed in. After numerous trips to the guitar store, I chose this over a telecaster deluxe. The fit and finish on this guitar are really outstanding. The sunburst fades beautifully, and really allows the wood to show through. I did have to adjust the action when I received the guitar, as some frets were buzzing after I tuned it up for the first time. I think most people would be ok with getting their guitar set up anyway, so I was already planning to spend that money. The great thing about this guitar is how amazing it sounds unplugged. It's not as loud as an acoustic, but it has all the personality you would expect from a good quality hollow-body. Plugged in, the tone of the pickups is very pleasing, and can be tuned to get that twangy, rockabilly sound Gretsch's are famous for, but it can also take on the tonal qualities of a les paul. Previous generations of the "gretschbucker" pickups didn't really give you that versatility, but I find that the pickups on this 09 model make the 5120 my go-to guitar for just about any style I play these days. The one thing I will say that I have found disappointing is the lack of sensitivity on the tone controls actually on the guitar. While I've stated above that the pickups are versatile, the amount of tone control is limited to somewhere between the 7 and 10 position on the pots. I've read up online, and this appears to be a common issue players have. If you're using a decent amp, or even have a modest effects rig, you should be able to get the tone you want with this guitar. I just wish the controls on the instrument were more useful. The instrument itself appears to be well-built, and I have had no major issues with the guitar in the 8 months I've had it. It is my first choice every time I need an electric on a track. Considering this guitar is almost a grand cheaper than the 6120 models, I consider this guitar an amazing find at this price level. I have been using this guitar at live gigs, and some have gotten pretty loud, but I have not had any feedback problems or wolf-tones which usually plague hollow body guitars.

    Compromise

    By Chris-T6Z99

    from Detroit, MI

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5120 Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

This is a fantastic looking and sounding guitar. Right out of the box everything was set up great.(It was even in correct tuning) I played this in the store sitting down and it was very easy to play so i had them grab me a new one in the back. I brought it home and hooked on a strap and all of a sudden it was WAY more difficult to play while standing up. unless you have it hanging very high up or very low it's a bit hard to play good. i play electric folk punk and mix in alot of palm mutes so it was hard to play this guitar with my style. but none the less a great guitar and i would recommend it. just try it with a strap first to make sure it suites your playing style.

Gretch great even on a budget

    By John A. Gonzales

    from Albuquerque nm

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5120 Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Just bought one. This guitare had great action strait out of the box. The guitare has great personality and playability. She stays in tune most of the time but remember it has a bigsby so occationally it will drift a little out of tune if you use it like I do. No I am not talking dives. I play a lot of classic rock and blues so i use it on songs where I may want to let the a lot more vibrato like say Riviera Paradice. Th pickup are clean and punchy with warmth. I have been using it more than my Les Paul Studio or my SRV strat. I have friends who have country gentleman and white falcons that think mine sounds pretty close to theirs. If I had more hands I would give it more thumbs up. so the best I can do is raise 2 thumbs 8 fingers and 1 Well you know. Later John A. Gonzales

    Really Great Guitar

    By Casey McAllister

    from New Orleans, La.

Comments about Gretsch Guitars G5120 Electromatic Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

How are they able to make hollowbodies this nice for this price? I've had the 5120 for just over two years now and this guitar absolutely rocks. I've been able to use it for country, funk, rock - just about everything except super hi-gain, and it comes through every time. With an AC-30 it's like they were made for each other. The pickups/electronics aren't bad for this pricepoint, but i'd rather something a little brighter. That's the only reason i'm not giving it 5 stars. I haven't changed them, though - i like 'em alright. If you want more twang, i'd go with the version with DeArmond singles. I got this one mostly for rock and haven't looked back. The feel of the guitar is great: as sturdy and solid feeling as guitars I've owned that cost twice as much. It's not a Gibson but a Gretsch, and an altogether different animal.
