G&L

The ultimate expression of the Leo tradition.

The S500 Deluxe's mahogany body with flame maple top, hard rock maple neck and rosewood fretboard are shaped and finished by hand by expert craftsmen. Each is then fitted with the refined hardware that makes every G&L play like a dream: jumbo frets, Magnetic Field Design G&L single-coil pickups, G&L dual-fulcrum tremolo bridge, and Schaller locking tuners. Special S-500 electronics include 3-band EQ and volume with a push/pull pot for pickup expansion.

Includes hardshell case. The patented Magnetic Field Design® pickups use a ceramic bar magnet installed underneath each coil, with soft iron adjustable pole pieces to transfer the magnetic field to the surface of the pickup. By contrast, traditional Alnico type pickups, such as used in the Legacy and George Fullerton models, use nonadjustable Alnico pole pieces leaving the only adjustment being pickup height. The Magnetic Field Design has this adjustment, but further offers individual adjustment of each pole piece, letting the player effectively adjust the output of each string on each pickup. Magnetic Field Design yield about twice the output per wind, making the pickup quieter while allowing a greater overall output. The sound of Magnetic Field pickups is slightly warmer with a broader frequency response.

One major Nashville session guitarist remarked that the G&L S-500 with Magnetic Field single coil pickups sounded as balanced and ""sweet"" as his favorite old vintage Alnico equipped axe. The difference is that the S-500 sounds that good right into his amp without all the EQ tweaking of his mixing console that made his other guitar sound so good. When he ran his S-500 though his studio rig, he was truly amazed at the rich and warm, yet clear and sparkly sound.

S-500, the real deal

Comments about G&L S-500 Deluxe Electric Guitar:

The S-500 the best Strat type guitar I've ever played/owned. I have been playing for over 40 years and had a number of American Fender Strats (vintage & new), but each had issues. My biggest problem with the Fenders had to do with tuning, and it seemed like a constant quest to tweak those rigs to hold when using the trem-bar. The S-500 does not have this problem. The trem-system along with the locking tuners holds true throughout long sets, even with light (10-46) strings. I had a G&L Legacy some years ago and it too held in tune when using the trem. I had a beautiful Fender 50th Anniversary Strat that I let go to get the S-500, and I've never regretted that switch. When I played the two side-by-side through a Fender Deluxe with all settings the same the G&L had a much fuller-richer sound, and more punch. The extra mini-toggle is also a bonus for tweaking your tone even more. I play a wide variety of music from rock to jazz and this axe does it all well. The neck on the G&L was much more comfortable with a satin finish rather than the Fender sticky gloss. The Fender did come with a better case, as it was the old school tolex type. The G&L case is a molded type, but is adequate for getting to and from the gig. If you do some research you'll find that Leo and George Fullerton refined the Strat with G&L and made it markedly better. The true test is to grab the guitars like I did and A-B with the S-500. You'll likely be buying your pride and joy after that .. the G&L.
