Once in awhile there turns out to be some truth buried beneath the layers of the bull and hype that make up the stories from the days of yore. The SG is pretty much what they've been said to be over the years. These are hard edged little thinline axes that roar with the ferocity of the rocknroll soul. This, for many, is what the humbucker sound is all about. These specials are the best "Real Gibson" guitars you're gonna find for a reasonable price. After 20+ years of axe swinging, I've found most Gibsons to be very over priced, and to some extent, overrated. The SGs, in all grades, are an exception. The tones are close to the Les Paul and with a decent tube amp the differences are all but non-existent. They are light and well balanced. If "looks" are important to you, these demons scream classic rocknroll. LOUD. As mentioned by someone else above, they are very touchy, if you change string gauges you will have to reset the saddles for intonation. The actions are usually a little high for me, but I play Rickenbackers first, so everything else feels high to me. My SG's action feels about the same as my American Strat's does, but the Gibby plays much smoother and easier. If you're into blues, the strings beg to be bent! It bends and wails like a dream. Excellent string to fretboard control. It's plain, and affordable, but its not "Cheap". The SG special is everything those old classic Gibson players swear a Gibson is, or at least, used to be. It's just in a "plain brown wrapper". Someday I hope to get an upgraded model just for the pretty cosmetics and chrome pickup covers. But for the moment the special will have to do me. If you want the classic gritty bump and grind of classic humbucker growl, and you want to own a "genuine Gibson" this little skull crusher's a hands down winner.

Not a bad guitar once I, leveled and re-crown the frets, set the relief, lowered the nut slots about .005" and set the intonation. I really like the action and feel of all SG necks, very nice. But until my work on it the guitar was a not stage worthy, something Gibson should be ashamed of but hey you get what you pay for. But now it is stage worthy, so all works out in the end.

awesome axe, even better neck
Comments about Gibson SG Special Electric Guitar:
This is my first Gibson. (I have a Fender Strat also). This guitar is faster, and has a better distorted tone to it. The Rosewood fretboard is awesome, and after you give the strings a tug, you can bend em all you want. Tune o matic bridge is cool.

sweet sound
Comments about Gibson SG Special Electric Guitar:
About a two years ago I decided to buy a new guitar. So when I got to the music shop and tryed a few out it bubbled down to two guitars. I was going to be choosing between a Fender Highway 1 Telecaster (which was very nice) and the Gibson SG. It was very hard but I ended up buying the SG. The sound is immense and sounds rather vintage. Sounds amazing clean and even better distorted. I would recommend this guitar to anyone. I upgraded the pickups in mine to EMG's but was having a little bother when the pickups went a bit funny (cutting of etc). From experience I would recommend not to change the stock pickups unless you want a very high output. The neck is a bit on the thick side but would be perfect if it was perhaps made with a 60's neck. The finish is spotless and shines all day every day. On the other hand i have found one thing that is a problem with this guitar. Mine goes out of tune very easy (even with heavy strings on it) which is very annoying. But apart from that, this guitar overall, is amazing.

A good piece of work...
Comments about Gibson SG Special Electric Guitar:
This guitar is perfect for all ages. The parts are good for beginners and good players can customize them to your liking. the are 2 down falls, both deal with the tuners, so not that big a deal... 1st, the Gibson Deluxe (aka green key) tuners brake easily, not sure if it is the quality or anything it happens to a lot of the stock tuners on the SG specials, so you will probably need to get another set. 2nd, the tuners are hard to find if you want a different brand, because the screw holes don't match most, but you can find a set of Grovers, but they look just as ugly.... Great guitar, bad tuners...

AMAZING!
Comments about Gibson SG Special Electric Guitar:
I just got my brand new Gibson SG Special today in wine red and it is a awesome guitar. The second I got home I took it to my room and started playing some AC/DC on it. It give me a nice distortion and I can play some good Led Zeppelin tunes on it. My favorite thing is it is extremely light and I can play it with one hand.

Top Class Guitar
Comments about Gibson SG Special Electric Guitar:
These are amazing guitars. I bought mine because I was a big fan of Tony Iommi and the sound I can get from these are exact. The guitar is very light which makes you able to play it with ease. I have bought many guitars such as fender strats and teles and some custom built which are more than 3 times the price of these and I still think these Gibson SG's are one of the best guitars out there.

Pretty Good
Comments about Gibson SG Special Electric Guitar:
I was impressed. It seemed to play really well, despite the fact that the action was pretty high at the time. (easily fixable) Basically, the only differences between this and the standard exist in the finish, which failed to impress, the dot inlays as opposed to trapezoids, and the open coil humbuckers. This guitar roars on high gain and sounds pretty good clean, although the neck pickup, especially, is a little on the muddy side. (nothing a pair of 57's couldn't totally fix. The neck is pretty good; it's thick so it may not be for you. Personally, I prefer a thinner 60's style neck. Over all, this is a very good guitar for the cash.
