The look of a well-loved, gracefully aged instrument.

The Gibson Faded SG Special is an electric guitar that maintains the tradition of looks, functionality, and value for which the SG guitar is known. Under its attractive faded finish, the Faded Special SG is still the traditional SG, with mahogany body and neck, Tune-O-Matic/stopbar bridge, and alnico 490 pickups. The guitar's faded finish gives it the look of an electric that started its rockin' days in the '60s.

A Little SG History

In 1961, the Les Paul was redesigned with a thinner body and 2 sharp cutaway horns that made the upper frets more accessible while lowering production costs. The new guitar was popular, but Les Paul the guitarist behind the original Les Paul did not like it and asked to have his name removed. Gibson renamed the model the "SG" which was short for "solid guitar". Though Les Paul's name was officially removed from the model in 1961, the plastic Les Paul nameplates (positioned between the rhythm pickup and fingerboard) were in abundance in the Gibson factory and SG models having these nameplates were built and sold by Gibson up to the end of 1963. SGs have been the choice of world-class artists such as Pete Townsend, Eric Clapton, Tony Iommi, and Angus Young.

I truly love this guitar. I've had it for 2 weeks, and out of all my axes I like this one the best. It looks really, really nice. the fretboard is especially pretty, the crescent moons on the ebony looks killer, and if you've not played on an ebony fretboard, you are missing out! It's like rosewood, 'cept 10x better. and it sustains forever. The faded cherry finish sets everything off nicely. This thing is HOT when it comes to tone. As any Gibson man knows, you can get any type of sound out of them. You want Punk? Metal? Jazz? Classic Rock? this guitar can really do it all, seriously. the neck pickups are nice and thick, reminiscent of a les paul, and the bridge pickups sound like an SG should! the bridge pickup has some serious bite to it. The neck is a bit thick ( I'm used to the pencil neck of my 71' SG) and takes some getting use to, but after a couple of hours playing it, it feels very natural and smooth, and for the price, you really can't beat it. It has fantastic tone, looks hot and plays smooth. I am thoroughly enjoying this instrument! You will too.

I previously said I was glad to have purchased this instrument. I since changed my mind mainly due to the sharp edges on many of the frets (poor fit and finish). Gibson should have not cut corners. I returned it and at a $50 savings I bought a Washburn X-50. Actually it is more like a a $130 better deal because the Washburn already had grover tuners and I would have spent more money on the Gibson having them put on plus be without the instrument for several weeks while it would have been at the shop for repairs and upgrades. Shame on you Gibson - at least on this specific model. I have an Exploreer Pro that is a high end top quality Gibson that is absolutely flawless and I love it.

A faded bargain

By the fundaMentals

Comments about Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar:

Gibson "affordable" SG is a real bargain. It plays great, looks great, has the limited lifetime warranty and everybody thinks it costs a lot more that it does. (The one small change I made was to replace the blank truss-rod cover w one that says "SG")
I get compliments on how great the guitar looks everytime I pull it out of the case.

Great Buy

Comments about Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar:

Amazingly light, solid guitar Sustains like a pro, great stock pickups, the neck feels great. This guitar is easy to pick up and just start jamming. Holds a tune *significantly* better than my Floyd Rose locking tremelo setup. You won't be unhappy with this guitar.

Only Gets Better With Age

By BucksStudent

Comments about Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar:

I've had this SG for five years now, and the guitar has come a long way from its original sound, look, and feel. If you adjust the pickups, you'll find a variety of tones; I used the factory setup for a long time, until I recently lowered the lead pickup and raised the neck for more LP sounds. Anyway, it's a one trick pony in the wrong hands, but can do many things in the right ones. Any style, any song, any gig, any amp: It sounds great. Bright, dark, and anywhere in between.

Excellent Guitar

By T-UlFMA

Comments about Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar from a friend about a year ago. I instantly fell in love with it. The entire thing is a giant slab of mahogany but its lightweight, which comes in handy when you're playing for hours. The pickups are very versatile, handling anything from sparkling clean to high-gain distortion. The neck feels great and is easy to move around on. The bridge is very comfortble, which is excellent for palm-muting. Restringing is extremely easy and quick (for metal players like me out there, I recomend Ernie Ball Skiny tops Heavy bottoms). I've had no problems keeping it in tune and no problems with the frets. The only problems I've encountered are one of the tuners breaking (human error not faulty equipment) and when the guitar is dry (not conditioned properly) the frets get a little sharp. This is an excellent guitar for any type of music.

Awesome

Comments about Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar:

This guitar is the best one i've played yet. The stock pickups are beast, they can handle the punishing distortion levels used in all types of metal. This is a great guitar and I'm suprised it's not more expensive than it is. Definetly worth a buy.

Great guitar, Even better price.

By N/A-Led_8

Comments about Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar:

The rhythm guitarist in my band has this guitar and it rocks. I like it as much as the standard, but if I owned it, I would put chrome pickup covers on it right away because the stock pickups are ugly. The sound is great though, so I don't want to change the pickups, just slap on some covers and you're good to go. Ths guitar absolutely rocks for the price. Made for rock, metal and blues though, none of that other crap. the faded cherry finish is something to stare at for hours, and it makes sliding on the neck very fast and non-stick. Fretboard is perfect. This guitar is all that you need basically.

Comments about Gibson Faded SG Special Electric Guitar:

This guitar is a great beginners guitar. You can shred, solo, and bend on this guitar without any trouble. I do have a few problems with it though- the dials are loose and I have tried to fix them but it just wont happen. This is a great rock guitar and Im sticking with Gibson and Epiphone because they make awesome guitars!!
