Gibson

Classic semi-hollowbody sound from a solidbody-sized guitar.

The ES-339 is the next generation from the Custom Shop of Gibson's iconic ES electric guitars. It goes where no guitar has gone before with a bold, new semi-hollow tone that is rich with expressive, even stinging, overtones. The ES-339 has some exciting enhancements including Memphis Tone electronics, the 30/60 slender neck profile, and reduced dimensions and weight.

Memphis Tone electronics
Memphis Tone circuitry utilizes 500K audio taper pots that operate with an interactive load that preserves high end as you turn down the volume. The loading effect preserves the full-bodied tone with rich midrange and singing sustain from the '57 Classic humbuckers while adding a very sweet bite. Another difference is the volume is very smooth, rolling off in even increments along with the numbers on the knobs. Since they operate more like how we hear (logarithmically), the controls work the way the player thinks they should. So when the guitarist turns down the volume the highs are still there!

30/60 Neck
Developed in assistance from guitar guru Jon Schwartz. The 30/60 slender neck is a '60s style neck with an extra .030" front-to-back to preserve the semi-hollowbody tone, sustain, and feel while providing smooth playability (The rounded '59 neck profile is also available on the ES-339 '59 Neck - product #515255).

Reduced dimensions and weight

The ES-339 builds on the success of the semi-hollowbody guitars first introduced by Gibson in 1958 with the ES-335. Lighter and more compact than a traditional semi-hollow guitar, the ES-339 retains the distinct semi-hollowbody electric tone that powered so many hit records and landmark performances.

Outer rim output jack

Here's one ES players have been wanting: The output jack is mounted on the outer rim. No more cable crossing the body, spoiling the guitar's clean looks and and getting in your way.

Two '57 Classic Humbuckers with 3-way pickup selection plus individual volume and tone controls provide the incredibly versatile sounds that make the semi-hollow electric famous for its use in jazz, rock, blues, country, and nearly every other style you can think of. Quality Kluson tuners keep retuning time to a minimum, and nickel hardware enhances the great looks.

To show off its vintage vibe, the ES-339 is available in a choice of three finishes: Antique Cherry, Antique Vintage Sunburst, and Light Caramel Burst. The lacquer finish is applied with a light, even touch, allowing the guitar's wood to resonate naturally while providing a protective, mirror-like shine. The Antique Cherry and Antique Vintage Sunburst both come with aged bindings to further enhance the proud ES tradition

The ES-339 comes with a Gibson Custom Shop hardshell case and a Certificate of Authenticity.

Gibson ES-339 Light Caramel Burst

By Eksteen Jacobsz

from Undisclosed

Comments about Gibson ES-339 Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar with 30/60 Neck:

I'm from South Africa and it was quite daunting to buy a guitar 'blind' over the internet from so far away. I have a 2006 CS-336 and a 1991 Les Paul Standard. What I looked at was either the ES-335 or the ES-339. After reading hundreds of reviews I decided on the ES-339 as I liked the size and the consensus was that there isn't a big sound difference between the 335 and 339, although in price there is.

What can I say about the guitar? Well, it is simply the best guitar I have ever played. The craftmanship is exceptional. This was a concern after reading about defects in reviews, but I can honestly say that this guitar is perfect. The setup and intonation is spot on too, which means I won't have to adjust it.

This guitar has in my opinion a much bigger and warmer sound than the CS-336. When you strum it you can feel the whole guitar come to life. It has a growl that not even my Les Paul can come close to, yet it has that distinctive semi-hollowbody warmth and much more variation in tone. The finish is flawless too and the volume/tone control system does work better than the CS-336's.

I have found my dream guitar. Can't wait to use her on my next album recording.

Comments about Gibson ES-339 Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar with 30/60 Neck:

This Gibson Custom Shop ES-339 is by far the best Gibson quality/value for the dollar you can buy. It covers the spectrum from Les Paul sounds to ES-335 semi-hollow body blues glory. Supreme quality from America's top manufacturer of fine musical instruments. A gem to treasure and will only appreciate in value. I highly recommend you buy one now before they raise the ante.

Decent Guitar

By Jason-whf5V

Comments about Gibson ES-339 Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar with 30/60 Neck:

I am on my second one of these guitars. The first one showed up with a ding in the back of the neck. It was returned and another one sent. The first one was really nice other than the ding. The only adjustment I had to make to it was to lower the bridge and stop tail. The action was high on it. Once I lowred the bridge and stop tail, it played great. I really like the pickups in this gutar. It is a good match. The second one that I reveived is also nice. I kept this one. However, the setup was far worse than the first one that I was sent. I had to adjust everything on it. Once I did that, it plays as good as the first one did. If this guitar were destroyed for some reason, I would buy another one. I like it that much. There are some minor finish issues that I think should not be on a guitar that costs this much. Mine has a small stain blotch at the neck joint in the bass cut away area. It really doesn't affect the guitar but it shouldn't be there if people are paying attention to what they are building. I hvae been spoiled by the fit and finish of hand built Hamer guitars as well as PRS guitars. This one does not have as good of fit and finish as those guitars do.

The Gibson ES 339

By Jeff Tallant

from Memphis

Comments about Gibson ES-339 Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar with 30/60 Neck:

I got my new ES 339 in the other day. I was excited when I got Gibsons email about the 339 and I couldnt hardly wait to get my hands on one. The fit and finish appeared to be good. I got the Carmel Burst model. This finish is only on the top and back. The sides and neck are finished in the brown mahogany color. The 30/60 neck feels great. Cosmetically the 339 has some nice features. The neck binding is a nice touch as well as being equipped with nickel instead of gold hardware. Gold hardware is flashy but tends to look like crap in a year or so. The guitars new size and weight makes it very comfortable to play sitting or standing. I have a ES 137 Custom and a Les Paul to compare with. After a whilte the Les Paul is a bit heavy when playing standing up and the ES 137s body makes it awkward to play for a long time sitting down. The 339 seems to play comfortably either way. Sound wise, I was impressed. I tend to lean toward a clean sound and the 339 appears to deliver quite well. Just for grins and giggles, I turned up the distortion and lit into Cat Scratch Fever and was more that just impressed, I was blown away!! The distorted sounds were better on the 339 than on my Les Paul. I have only two gripes about the new 339. First of all the case wasnt very impressive. It does not have a combo lock like my Les Pauls case nor does it have a shroud like both of my other Gibson cases.
