Based on a '57 Strat with a maple fretboard.

After years of painstaking research and design, the Fender Eric Johnson Stratocaster Electric Guitar has finally arrived. Designed with Eric by Custom Shop guru Michael Frank-Braun, this beauty is based on a '57, and combines the best of vintage design with modern electronics technology.
The '57-style, 2-piece alder body has an ultrathin, Custom Shop-quality nitrocellulose lacquer finish that results in better resonance. Johnson opted for a one-piece, quartersawn maple neck with a 12" radius that's finished with a thin-skinned glossy lacquer and vintage tint. 19 prototype pickups were created before Johnson found the tone he was looking for. The Custom Shop-modified single coils use a new wire material and winding technique for the magnets giving them a unique, Eric Johnson-approved sound. Johnson and Braun also included one of Eric's most famous Strat modifications by wiring the tone controls to the neck and bridge pickups, instead of the standard neck/middle tone configuration of most Strats.

This guitar offers tonal perfection thanks to the discerning ear of one of the best players to ever pick up an axe. And it's pleasing to the eye as well, with its large arm contour, '57-style pickguard and shallow pickup cavities, plus thin headstock with vintage staggered tuners that eliminate the need for a string tree. Unbelievable Custom Shop-like quality in a production axe. Includes case.

Check the drop-down menu to the right to select colors and/or other options.

Great guitar! Smells wonderful, even after Opening the case about 100 times now. Love the feel of the v-neck, every time I grab it off of the stand I have to smile. Just go play one. Had to change those old strap buttons to fender locks, I don't want to loose this baby. Guitar has a very stiff feel, might be the trem system with all the springs, but I can actually use it and not go out of tune!. Trem Bar screwed in very hard, almost to the point where I was going to take it back and let them install it. Seems to be all right, and is finding its place. Center pickup magnets get in the way of my picking. Not sure on how to correct this with out lowering the pick up. This is the loudest guitar un plugged I have ever heard. This is about the tenth strat I have owned, all the ones in the past seem like toys now. Thanks Eric...

This is a very high quality guitar, great, light resonant wood, meticulouly made, with an excellent finish on the body, neck, etc. Naturally the frets are smooth, and dressed. An excellent playing guitar. The guitar comes set up with 5 springs. I did not like that, that makes the tension a little tighter and naturally renders the tremelo inoperative. I changed the set up to three springs, the bridge is about 1/8th inch off of the body and the tremelo is smooth and positve, excellent, great control.

The pickups are well balanced and the tone control adjusts tone for neck and middle, and the the other tone control, adjusts tone for the bridge and middle, the middle pickup has no tone control so it is always in a treble mode, i didn't think i would like that but i do, great pickups, only avaiable on this model. Vintage black strap, and a vintage cable, the cable is a quality one but the cable end is small and that makes it a little difficult to remove, so I haven't been using it, the wire color is gray like back in the day.

The neck is a soft V that transisitions into a C, a little larger than average, very comfortable. I have played about 7 or 8 EJ strats over the last 5 years, everyone has been good and consistent, so I had no qualms about bying this one without playing it first.

If you are looking for a top of the line strat, get the EJ, nitro finish, you can feel all the strings vibrate touching the head, intonation was right on and it is staying in tune with very minor tweaking.

Definitely Different!

By Jake-670lD

from Laguna Niguel, CA

Comments about Fender Artist Series Eric Johnson Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

The two things that set this guitar apart from standard issue Strats are the light weight and the hefty neck profile. These are two features that are common to the high end Custom Shop Fenders. Most new players won't like the thicker neck and the "stiff feel" of the 10's (strings) pulling against a tremolo ratcheted down with a full complement of springs. But it is this combination that results in the unique tone & sustain. At the same time, it is not as forgiving of sloppy playing. The tone knobs control neck and middle/bridge pups - a set up that I prefer. The staggered tuners are very stiff - they stay put - a good thing! I purchased mine when they first came out. I would not have bought one with binding on the neck. It's a personal preference, but it is just not Strat-like to me. As a final note, I wouldn't try to use the tremolo as shipped from the factory. The 6 pivot screws on mine were too tight to allow the necessary movement, even if the springs were loosened, or several removed. If you remove a couple of the springs and allow the tremolo float, you will lose sustain. All of those springs and the steel block resonate/vibrate in harmony with the rest of the instrument. Bottom line, throw the wammy bar away. I currently have 6 Strats, a Gipson CS356, a PRS Custom 24, a Telecaster, a MusicMan Axis, Carvin DC400 and several other guitars. My number one guitar is a 2004 American Deluxe Strat with v-neck profile & SCN Pups. This guitar has multiple personalities and is more versatile, but the EJ is sufficiently different to justify ownership. Do yourself a favor, if you buy one, team it up with a decent tube amp and this combo will blow you away!

Beautiful Instrument

By Doug

Comments about Fender Artist Series Eric Johnson Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

This guitar is excellent. It plays smooth and in tune on all the frets. The controls all work and the sound is great. I was disappointed with the condition, but it was just minor. It had some grime on the back of the body, and some of the screws were not all the way in. So I had to tighten the screws and clean off the grime. Otherwise it is a beautiful and wonderfully sounding instrument.

Finest Strat I ever played

By Olaf

from Maine

Comments about Fender Artist Series Eric Johnson Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

I've played a few Strats from the 60's through now. Never have I played any as smooth as this one. The action is really sweet. The V-neck is fast and the fretting is perfect for my fingers. This baby practically plays itself. You won't be disappointed. It is true that this played without an amp is totally clear and resonates like it should. I love the savvy switch settings. My search is over for the perfect strat. What a piece of workmanship. Thanks EJ and Fender for a real first class high quality lady with a voice as sweet as they come.

off the hook!

By Joe B

Comments about Fender Artist Series Eric Johnson Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

Got the black, very nice guitar. It has a great neck that's a very comfortable V shape, ending in a fatter C shape. I was impressed with tone controls. The treble pick up has no tone control making it easy to switch into lead. It already up so you don't have to mess with knobs the bridge and middle pick ups. The tone control range from a soft fat tone to a twang, soaring and ripping sound I'm very happy with the sound through my Gibson Class A amp and is a nice compliment to my Hendrix pedal. Bottom line, it's great is this is a great strat at a fair price. Can smell the nitro coat when I open case. Good luck! Joe B

Wonderful guitar

Comments about Fender Artist Series Eric Johnson Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

This is now my 4th Stratocaster....I am a huge fan of Eric Johnson and just had to buy one. If there is anyone on the planet that knows exactly how a Fender Strat should be built it is him. I never played one and bought sight unseen. I just received my 2-tone and when I opened the box I felt just like a child at Christmas time...if you're a strat player this is the one GO BUY ONE no excuses!!!

Amazing guitar. Why don't the build them all like this?

By Bill-QbNTG

from Richmond, Va.

Comments about Fender Artist Series Eric Johnson Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

It is a very light and resonant guitar. The quarter sawn neck has the straightest grain I've ever seen. I doubt it will ever need adjusting. The neck has a fairly flat radius with larger frets than standard which allows a very light action with no string buzz. Pick ups are glassy with no hint of brittleness and are very toneful. They seem to be hotter that standard strat pups. I won't elaborate on all the features. All I can say is that Eric Johnson is obviously a very savvy guitarist and has an acute understanding of what makes a guitar sound and play well. It is obvious that every feature on this guitar has been cultivated by years of experimentation in real life situations. I feel very blessed to be able to enjoy this replication of his vision. Thanks EJ & Fender.

pure magic for your ears

By Rego

from Los Angeles , Ca

Comments about Fender Artist Series Eric Johnson Stratocaster Electric Guitar:

Everything that you have heard about this guitar from the bell like tones, to the creamy sounding pickups are true. I got a black one about 2 weeks ago, and it seems to get better sounding as the days go by. When you get yours, the first thing that you need to do is change strings. The ones that they came with are a little brittle sounding. Other than that the skies the limit with this bad boy.
