This is not a beginner's guitar! It's too good for beginners. I don't even let my fellow students play it. This guitar is better then any guitar in it's price range now only $129. This is too cheap and unbelievable. I chose this one over three guitars at $179 because the others won't rock the way I wanted. Not that it has the SG style, it rocks like one. I can make this axe sound like the irritating buzz that was made by Angus (AC/DC)with my used Peavey amp, this is too cool to be true. I can't do it with Fender, Stratocaster 2, and Silvertone. I love this guitar from the day I received it. I will buy another one if this one gets stolen. The one bad thing about this guitar is that the tone knob makes scratchy noise just when you turn it up. I would also recommend replacing the strings with light Gibson or any nickel.

I walked into a music store needing something quality and inexpensive with a good tone and was easy to play. I had been borrowing someone's Fender Squire strat and needed this to lead worship at my church. This guitar was inexpensive and sounded great, and it was easy to play. I picked it up right away. My only complaint is the electronics. I got it used, and the input jack was a little loose. On trying to tighten it, I ended up wrapping the internal wires around the jack and then disconnected the solder joint. I had it repaired but the volume knob is still acting up.

Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:
I didn't purchase this one from this site, but recently bought one from a local guitar store and wanted to add my two cents...
I'll say first I'm a fairly recent return to guitars after a long time of not playing, and when I got back into it I purchased several different mid-high / mid priced guitars over the span of a year.. This includes two US Strats and a PRS SE 245, with countless upgrades to both Strats..
I saw this Epiphone on the wall and had a credit at the store, so I decided to purchase it and take a chance since it looked so good and seemed to play well in my hands... I didn't even plug it into an amp while I was there, just had a feeling about it..
After owning it for a few weeks, I now think I've been a guitar snob for avoiding these before now, and I could have saved myself a ton of money with it instead of the higher priced Strats and all of their upgrades (active pickups in both, etc)..
This SG has an awesome sound, plays great, looks great, and is probably in my top two favorite guitars that I own now.. I've had zero problems and have loved every second of playing it..
I get more playing time in now because I'm not working on the thing so much to pull the tone I want out.. It hit it on the first lick..
It is simply a Great guitar... If you're starting out and need a cheaper priced guitar that will give you more quality out than money you put in, this is it..
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

FAIL!!!!!!!!!
Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:
This is easily the worst guitar ever! I bought the Cherry. I have played guitar 5 years and I thought this would be a good guitar to add to my collection! Wrong. When I unwrapped it it looked great Then I plugged it in to my amp and the whole imput jack completly came out of my guitar. This was easily the worst guitar i've bought, played, and just wasted my time and money on. Please be smart and don't buy this guitar.

It's great
Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:
Obviously it won't be as a Gibson but is a pretty awesome guitar, sounds really good and looks great. By the way... finish is better than you see in the picture. If you want a SG and you can't buy a Gibson, believe me when I say this is a worth while choice! (And its price is quite good)

What AN SG-SPECIAL SURPRISE
Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:
I bought my SG-Special when I flew down to Jacksonville, NC. to see my grandchildren.I did'nt feel like paying the extra baggage fee for one of my LPs or Telecasters and quite frankly was worried about theft or damage on one of the flight legs(not a great deal of faith in the airline industry).Anyway, what a pleasant surprise when I opened the carton,(I ordered mine in ebony) and what an eye catching beauty. A really, really great finish! This was only the beginning of the pleasant surprises!I plugged it in to a practice amp, tuned it up(no problem),and what a great action(at least my guitar)has.A neck you don't have to wrestle with to play and as quick a neck as my old arthritic fingers can handle. The sound? Those open coil humbuckers are great does'nt matter whether I'm in a Leslie West(Mountain) mood,Gerry Garcia mood,or I feel like playing some Flying Burritto Bros., those humbuckers really do the trick..A really great guitar not only for a beginner or as a beater, but a guitar you can really make music with.I love it!

Worth the money
Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:
Ok. I decided to take a chance on the Epiphone SG Special. I read a couple of reviews and said what the heck. Bottom line is the guitar is a great value, its inexpensive, and it plays very well. I decided to purchase it as Music 123 describes Gently Used, to my amazement it was V E R Y Gently used, I could hardly see that it was ever handle. Now for the test, I hooked up the tuner and two min later I had it plugged up and once again amazed at how well the sound and action was straight out of the box. I took a min to lower the action and was again surprised that even with the action lowered (a lot) I did not get any buzz off the strings. The guitar is not a heavy block of wood and this also makes it a plus. I have owned many guitars over the years and by far this is the best purchase Ive made for the value and enjoyment I received.

I've had 40 years owning epiphones with never a complaint
Comments about Epiphone SG-Special Electric Guitar:
My favorite test of an electric guitar is to crank up the amp and rip some strum and some bar chords. The epiphone SG-special sounds very clean, not garbled. Each string of the chord is heard equaly.I bought 3 epiphones since 1970 ,I still have each and never had a complaint about any of them.Music123 keeps their prices very fair, and doesn't rob you like most walk in music stores.
