Well, how can you go wrong with a mandolin, gig bag, starter book and chord books for this price?
First of all the Gig bag is almost worth the price on its own. Nicely padded and lots of room. Great for taking the mandolin to music lessons etc. The books are also fine and a nice throw in.
My mandolin played fine right out of the box. After a basic set up and new strings it sounds fine.
For learning if you like the mandolin and gigging in your basement with friends, this is a pretty hard unit to beat. It won't touch a top rate solid instrument or a starter Kentucky, but it is right up there with the starter Epiphones and Washburns which cost considerably more.
Almost an unbelievable deal at the price.

So this mandolin is actually very good. Though it is a starter mandolin, it is very good and it looks good but the only problem is that it is not the best in sounding because the action is too high. If there is a possible way for buyers to use sandpaper to sand the bridge down a little then I suggest you do so. The books are very helpful. They have chord charts to show.

Comments about Rogue Learn-the-Mandolin Package:

This is the 2nd one of these purchased from Music123. You can read my earlier negative review. This one was MUCH better. String alignment was great.

Now for the review. First, this mandolin is NOT set up. If you plan on ordering this, tuning it up, and playing it, you will be VERY disappointed. This mandolin requires a professional setup to begin being playable. Once you invest the time and/or money to do it correctly, you will be surprised what a decent instrument it is for the money.

Search Rogue Mandolin on YouTube and you will find videos from Rob Meldrum. He will be glad to send you the instructions for making this a perfectly fine instrument.

Does it sound like my $1000+ mandolins? No, but I didn't expect it to, but it does play better than some entry level mandolins, if you invest the time to set it up.

The finish was flawless I night add.

Lacking quality control

        Comments about Rogue Learn-the-Mandolin Package:

I have a rather expensive Mandolin, but ordered one of these for those times relatives/friends want to play with my toys. I did not expect much for the price, and could have lived with any cosmetic issue. The problem was the tail piece was drilled and mounted 1/2" off from where the strings would align on the fretboard. The only way to really fix this would have been to redrill and remount the tailpiece. This would have left exposed holes, etc. I have returned this for a replacement and will review again when I receive the next one. I am hoping this was just a one-time issue that missed quality control. Music123 was excellent about handling the return and I would not hesitate to buy from them again.

        Great buy and great fun!!

        Comments about Rogue Learn-the-Mandolin Package:

I play a little guitar but had never played mandolin. Always loved the mandolin sound so thought I could try with this price. I am having a wonderful time learning and teaching my daughter how to play. This instrument is easy to maneuver and sounds great for the investment. The how-to and chord books are super easy to follow and will have you playing in no time even if you are a beginner in music. I do have an electric tuner and picked up the Beatles and Christmas books which helped me play familiar tunes quickly and got my daughter interested. I have not had any issues tuning or with string height. If the thing fell apart today I feel I already got my money's worth in joy and satisfaction. Highly recommend as a starter instrument to see if you like the mandolin! What a bargain!! Thanks for the FUN!!

Good deal and you can make it better

        By Andrew Chu

        Comments about Rogue Learn-the-Mandolin Package:

A few friends in my choir bought this package. My daughter plays violin and guitar. I bought one for her to see if she would like mandolin. I think she will like to add another toy in her room. Since it does not cost too much, I bought one for me. For this price, you can buy one to hang on the wall as a decoration.

However, this price for its contents is a steal even for an amateur musician. Its workmanship is decent, and it makes bright sound. A plus is that its bridge has two adjustable screws to adjust the height the strings above the figure board. The pick guard board will need to be removed. So that does not matter.

For the do-it-yourselves, you can do a few simple things to make it better.

As a few have complained, the strings, especially E strings, need to be replaced. They are in lower quality. One of the pieces I bought came without the end loop to hook on the pole at the tailpiece. When I tried to tune it, the loop was pulled open. However, when I called the vendor, they gave me a replacement for free.

The cuts for E and A on the nut are too shallow, and so the four strings are placed at the same height that makes E string hard to press down on first few frets. The grooves for E and A need to be sanded deeper and the screw on the bridge on E string side can be lowered to make it closer to the board.

This piece is new from shop. When I opened the package, it smells like an oil painting. You can take it outside and leave it in a shade for a few hours. All the smell is gone. Keep an eye on it in case of rain.

        Just Get it

        Comments about Rogue Learn-the-Mandolin Package:

This Mandolin package is so much fun per dollar you'll be grinning for a long time over this purchase. Good fit and finish, it does need some attention to the bridge placement and string spacing on the saddle. Tone is fine. Playability is acceptable. Just go play it and you'll know why I'm grinning. It's a keeper for me as I just wanted to plunk around a mando for a while to supplement my guitar habit.

        Great Price Kinda great mandolin?

        Comments about Rogue Learn-the-Mandolin Package:

Well, the price was awesome and it got here on time. And when I saw it, it looked awesome. The bag is in great condition. Its not cheap at all. One of the books is 4 pages long, its a chord chart basically. The other book that I got is good and its somewhat big. Now the mandolin is made of plywood, the pickguard is a little cheap but bearable, the bridge is painted wood but is sturdy. All in all its good. The one compliant I have, is that the strings are cheap! They should be replaced, once done it sounds way better. But in all its a great buy for the price.

        Bad Deal

        By Brent Waale

        from Undisclosed

        Comments about Rogue Learn-the-Mandolin Package:

I bought the mandolin starter pack back in Dec. of 2009. I had used it to try to learn and ultimately moved up to a different model. This was my back up model, that would be mic'ed if we had to use it. The gig bag was the best value of the deal. I had only changed strings on it one time about a week ago. While the strings that came with it would never stay in tune, and continually sounded tinny, I put up with them and this last month finally put new ones on. The bottom E strings would not tune up for anything. They kept stretching. I thought that was par for the course, when they both broke at the same time. When I checked the rest of the strings for their tension...the damn thing came apart in my hands right where the neck meets the body. Shoddy glue job. While the mandolin did do it's job of getting me started, it had no longevity whatsoever.

Decent for the amount of money

        By Edward Rivera

        from Undisclosed

        Comments about Rogue Learn-the-Mandolin Package:

I believe that for the price of this package it is worth it... The book that comes with this was ok although I thought it could have shown people a few more things such as how to actually tune the mandolin, it focuses mostly on songs. The chart booklet is decent because it shows you the chords... The case that came with this was actually better than I had thought being as how it is padded... I have been interested in learning the mandolin for awhile I bought this mandolin package because I thought for what is included it is worth the money and thought that it would be good to find out if I would want to keep playing mandolin before investing a considerable amount of money on one... Keep in mind that this is a low end instrument and that it should not be compared to higher end mandolins.

        Great price

        By Shelley Olson

        from Undisclosed

        Comments about Rogue Learn-the-Mandolin Package:

I still can't figure out why this pack is such a great price, but hey I am not complaining. I got for my bff for xmas and she really likes it. From a distance the mandolin looks very nice, but upon closer inspection you can tell it is def a cheapy instrument. Before I even saw the mandolin my other friend had her husband adjust the bridge and action, tune it, ect, it took him about an hour to get it playable. Something to keep in mind if you don't know how to do setups yourself. The tone is okay but could sound much better. In all, I give this an 8 mainly due to the price.
