An all-solid value from Kentucky — America's favorite mandolin.

The Kentucky KM-150 mandolin is a fabulous value available in an all-solid, traditionally designed, A-style instrument that beautifully combines period-correct vintage specifications with an amazingly affordable price. When it comes to tone and playability, the KM-150 also excels. To achieve the best tone and volume possible, select solid spruce - meticulously hand-carved and graduated - is used for the top, while select solid maple is used for the back and sides. A solid maple neck with rosewood fingerboard and traditional snakehead-shaped peghead is attached to the body by a modified dovetail neck-body joint not only adds to the authentic look, but also has a comfortable shape that is easy to play, and offers a lifetime of serviceability. Top everything off with a set of accurate, open-geared tuners, an adjustable rosewood bridge and tuning will be easy, accurate and with perfect intonation every time.

Comments about Kentucky KM-150 Standard A-Model All-Solid Mandolin:

This is a great value in a good, all solid wood mandolin, but there appears to be inconsistent quality control. I had to return the first one I was sent because of bad fretwork. Some of the higher frets were not fully seated, and there was some sloppy workmanship in the shaping of the fretboard and binding on the neck. The nut was not mounted properly either. The second one I received was much better built and the sound was more open and resonant. A little time spent setting it up gave me a great playing and sounding mandolin. The action is low without any buzzes and I have the neck almost straight, with a small relief of .006 at the 7th fret. Action at the nut (on the second one I received) was perfect as it came, and it was easy to set the bridge for perfect intonation, although the carving of the bridge feet was a little rough, especially on the treble side. I smoothed it with a curved blade knife so that it fit well under full string tension. The tuners seem fine and after a couple of days it stays in tune very well. The woods are not fancy or figured, but the quality seems good.
If you're able to do a proper setup, or have one done, this is a great buy.

Kentucky 150

Comments about Kentucky KM-150 Standard A-Model All-Solid Mandolin:

I bought this as a starter instrument and couldn't be more pleased. As a lifelong guitarist, I found the Kentucky to be an easy transition that held its own from both quality and performance standpoints. The fit and feel was exactly what I was looking for. I've used it for playing out in an ensemble and it has never let me down. The volume and tone are exceptional, especially considering the bargain price. I'd recommend this instrument to aspiring mandolinists as well as experienced string players looking to expand their horizons.
