I really like the feel of this instrument. It has a nice weight when sitting down, but some might want to consider a strap if you plan to play standing up.The tuners are very good - after a few days of 'string stretch' the ukulele stayed in pitch very well.I am planning to change the nylon strings to a metal/nylon combination so that the bass comes out a bit more, but the tones produced are fine. The gig bag that is recommended is a bit tight, so I am considering the hard case, but that is down the road. This is a good intermediate-level instrument.

Usually use my acoustic 'ukes but sometimes I need amplificaiton. My acoustic/electric 'uke just wasn't cutting it. After reading all the great reviews, I looked forward to playing the tenor Applause. I immediately put on Aquila strings since the strings that came on it were pretty awful. The 'uke is very heavy and a strap was necessary to use it when I played it standing up. When sitting to play, the "bowl" shape felt awkward since I'm used to the traditional shape and back of 'ukuleles. It kept rolling over on its back and slipping off my lap.
I wasn't expecting great acoustic sound, so I wasn't disappointed when there was almost no acoustic projection or tone. When I plugged it in, the "low battery" light flashed. However, it plays well and sounds great when amplified. Amp adjustments were easy to use and made the 'uke sound way better than it would have otherwise. I assumed I needed to change the battery to stop the flashing light. There is nothing in the generic owner's manual (which was about Ovation guitars) about how to do that. After reading numerous internet complaints about how difficult it is to change the pre-amp battery on an Applause 'uke and how ridiculous the design is, I decided to attempt it anyway. I figured it out and it was not too difficult, though it does take time and patience - and having a small hand helps since you have to reach into the innards of the 'uke through the hole in the 'uke's back. Installed a very fresh 9v battery. Plugged it in --- and the low battery light didn't flash anymore. Now the low battery light stayed on all the time it was plugged in.
Disappointed overall with this 'uke.

Comments about Applause UAE148 Acoustic-Electric Tenor Ukulele:
I got this for my wife for Christmas. She really enjoys it. It sounds great amplified or not.
The only reason why it did not a get a 5 out of 5 star rating is due to its awkward sizing. Ironically, Ovation does not make a hardshell case for this product at the time of my writing this review.
My only advice: be sure to get the Gator GWE-Acou-3/4 Hardshell 3/4-Size Acoustic Guitar Case BLACK case if you look for a hardshell case for this.
I tried the Reunion Blues RB Continental Tenor Ukulele Case, the Silver Creek Vintage Tenor Ukulele Case Black, and finally ended up with the 3/4 (junior) size guitar case by Gator and saved some money doing it.
Here are the measurements I took for the body, in case you want to do your own searching:
Height 28.5" or 29" w/ button for shoulder strap
Width upper bout 7.5"
Width middle bout 6.75"
Width lower bout 10.75"
Depth 3.25" or 3.5" with bridge
Body width 13.5"
I post this so as to save others the heartache I went through.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Applause UAE148 Acoustic-Electric Tenor Ukulele:
I thought I would try something new, I'm a banjo player and wanted to expand my music. The banjo isn't really a solo instrament. I picked a ukulele because I have more fingers then it has strings so I thought I could cover it well. I finger pick the ukulele so I play it different then most uker's. The applause is a fine instrament, the factory strings did not do it justace acoustically, so I restrung it to give it more punch. Pulg it in and WOW!! It really sings. I have a couple of other uke's, the Applause has great action, the solid wood top gives it great tone and long and full sustain. The round back tends to want to slide around, so get a strap, it has strap buttons on it so that's easy. It dosn't fit a standard tenor case I haven't found a case yet so it sits in the cardbord box it came in. I'm still looking. Keep playing.

great uke
Comments about Applause UAE148 Acoustic-Electric Tenor Ukulele:
The strings are soft and doesn't need much adjustment tuning for being brand new. you'll have to get a guitar strap if playing this ukulele for gigs, the plastic backing slides out of place easily while playing. but the sound quality with and without an amp is soothing. finger placement on the strings do not give you that "players cramp" after long usage like most ukuleles. and the all around Ovation design for the Applause guitars and ukuleles really catches the audience's eye's let alone their ears. Possibly the best ukulele i've ever played and owned.

It's everything I wanted.
Comments about Applause UAE148 Acoustic-Electric Tenor Ukulele:
I bought my Applause tenor ukulele about three years ago. The fit and finish is very good - as I have come to expect from Ovation products. I tuned it to low G and it has a rich sound for such a small instrument. It's not very loud but the electronics are good and it works well with an amplifier. I mostly perform for children. The tenor uke fits my vocal style better than a soprano, and the kids think it's fun to see someone playing a "little guitar" as they call it. I highly recommend this product!

New strings Update! Acoustic 4+ STARS
Comments about Applause UAE148 Acoustic-Electric Tenor Ukulele:
I put an Aquila Nylgut Low G set on and it sounds much MUCH better acoustically. The original strings were really junky. Gave it a closer inspection as I lemon oiled the fret board and found the nut was left 1/16"+ too wide on one side, a couple of very small glue spots on the fret board, and a couple of frets are a tiny bit sharp and tried to grab at my polish cloth. With the old "fishing line string" off, three tuner posts were kind of wobbly and one was stable but the trim ring was not seated to the face. ??? I won't report back, but I am going to have these things checked out. Despite needing these minor adjustments, I still very much like this ukulele, think it well worth the price for an electric acoustic uke and recommend you put some decent strings to get a nice sound you'll enjoy.
