Comments about Yamaha 2013 Stage Custom Birch Tom:
I bought this tom as an additional voice for my 5 piece Stage Custom Birch kit hoping that it would match the tonal scale that I got from the kit naturally. I want to say that it was right on spot! I tune my drums to their fundamental note (not low, not high, but where the shell resonates most) and this drum, when tuned to it's maximum resonance, it a prefect third higher than my 10" tom! So, adding the 12" that has a fourth below the 10", the melody that these 3 toms bring is extremely sweet! I can't say enough good things about the Yammy SCB! The sound is resonant and clear (lots of attack with single ply heads and nice low end with double ply emperors). I am ordering a 14" floor soon, since there is a musical hole between the 12" rack and the 16" floor. I can anticipate that it will bring a nice octave below the 10" and a fifth below the 12" for a perfect family of shells. These drums sound very good together and it is the best sound you can get for the money. My only complaint is the finish. Unfortunately, when you put the finish (Raven black) against the light, you can see the scratches from a buffer. That makes the finish dull and not so deep. When I bought the 5 piece shell pack in a retail store, I thought that those swirls were due to the kit being in stock for a long time (people cleaning it with the wrong cloth)). To my surprise, when opening this well sealed drum, I found the swirls on it! I am a Pearl guy and the Pearls have a wonderful glassy finish! I had to do some elbow grease and polish the drums with a premium car polish to erase the swirls and get a nice deep look. Even after I got rid of the tiny scratches, the finish is not 100% smooth. In dark colors, this is more visible. As for the rest, for such a low priced drum, it is worth every penny! Professional sound when tuned correctly and with the right drum heads.
