Comments about Trophy Dumbek:
The 10" is simply and crudely made (all that decoration is made with only two different metal punches), but tunes up nicely and has a really big, responsive sound. The wingnuts on the tuners are sharp and annoying, but that's easily solved with simple rubber housekey covers, though it still takes pliers to turn them. Might be worth replacing them with slightly sturdier, will do if they break or stick. Nevertheless, assuming it lasts, it's a really nice piece. And even when the head and rings die, the rings are replaceable, separate from the body, which my last metal dumbek sadly didn't have, had to pitch it when the bolt receivers broke. Further, if you haven't tried it, for recording purposes you can also secure some key chain over the head, works as a snared tenor drum or marching drum if you use sticks judiciously. Happy all around, as it also has a very good feel next to the body...it's Pakistani made, and I'm playing some music from there on it ("Dholak Geet"), but also equally suits for unusual applications like old-timey ("Bonaparte's Retreat"), Celtic ("Bedlam Boys")...don't limit yourself...!
