Comments about Remo Emperor X Coated Batter:

I just put the Emperor X on my Premier 14"x5" Chrome shell. After using a single ply, this was a change.

I started from scratch and took my time - New top skin, new bottom AND new snare wires.. I knew the sound I wanted. Kind of an Alex Van Halen but with even more of a crack. The steel is perfect for me and the sound I like although it tends to have a lot of top end and not much mid or low, plus it tends to have an abundance of ring.

The Emperor X is a great choice for this. I started on the bottom though. A Remo Ambassador Hazy Snare for the snare side. I went right ahead and tightened this to the maximum. That point at which the extremely thin snare bottom starts to stretch and not raise in pitch, then backed off slighty. Yep - that tight!

Then put on a new set of wires. I went for the "best" (imo) Puresound and used the "Blasetr" series which places more pressure on the snare wires. These are very good snares.

I then placed the batter side (Emperor X of course) and I tightened it a med-high tension to START.

Placed the snare on the stand and started with the wires at the loosest setting and progressively tensioned to get the sound I wanted. Nice snare wire sustain without choking the drum and give a good, even balance between shell sound and snare sound. One thing I did do was slightly loosen the 4 lugs (two on either side) of the snare wires - about half a turn.

Then I started playing. I'd play a bit then I'd tension up the top head 1/4 of a turn then played it, then another 1/4 turn up and played - repeated this until I got the sound I liked. The result was a high to very high tension - it was tight! I actually had to change the hoop as it only had 1.6mm steel hoops and they were flexing at each lug. Flicked on a 2.3mm heavy duty hoop and totally solved that. Plus it gave a more powerful rimshot.

All I can say is WOW does the drum sound amazing! I mean beyond what I expected. The Emperor X - being a thick head - gives the drum more mid and bottom end than a single ply, yet with the high tension gave an amazing crack yet with depth you wouldn't normally get from chrome/steel shells. The snare wires were not very tight as I liked a bit of sustain and sensitivity. You can barely drop the stick on the outer edge and the snares activate. I did add a thin donut (strip of mylar just sitting around the edge of the drum 1" wide) to cut the extra ring.

Totally loving this sound! Hope this helps someone out there!!!

Comments about Remo Emperor X Coated Batter:

The first thing I noticed about this head, is how thick it is. It's the thickest head I've ever played on.To get this head to sound good, you have to tighten it till' you can't tighten anymore. This head is all or nothing. Oh yeah, this head has all the bounce you want and need. You just have to tighten it all the way.Oh yeah.

By Best Pedal Ever

from Lititz, Pa

Comments about Remo Emperor X Coated Batter:

I have played awhile and had beaten the heck out of my snare heads, but after I tried the Emperor X. I LOVED IT!!! It was beautiful, I could beat it to hell and it would still be okay. The best way to describe this head,"a metal drummers calling".

By sonor drummer

from augusta GA

Comments about Remo Emperor X Coated Batter:

This head is the best head I've ever used. It lasts really long. I've had 1 head on my snare for a really long time, it sounds awesome on a 5.5 inch x 14 inch steel snare tune tight I don't know what yall are talking about when you say it doesn't have bounce, when its tuned tight it has all the bounce in the world. If you like your snare head tight, then this is the head for you.

Comments about Remo Emperor X Coated Batter:

I have used this head for about 6 months, and I absolutely love it. It is louder than hell, and flat out sounds great. I have always had trouble tuning my snare until I got this head, it made it so much better. It is perfect for my music punk and metal.
