Great sound, great look, good gigging size

By David Robertson

from Motor City, Michigan, USA

Comments about Pearl Omar Hakim Signature Snare Drum:

The shell has a beautiful wood grain and finish. The inside is smooth and edges are great. With the high quality lugs, hoops, and T rods this drum tunes up easily and stays in tune really well. There are several tuning "sweet spots." Tune it up tight for a killer "crack" sound. Tune it medium for a solid middle-of-the-road "thop" sound. Tune it down a bit for rock, alternative, or modern country. Plus, it has a great cross-stick sound. As usual, the 13 inch size is a convenient gigging size and great for a compact drum kit set-up. However, this is no piccolo drum and not your typical 13 inch snare drum. With the African mahogany shell, quality hardware, and great workmanship, this can serve as a primary snare drum. The tonal characteristics of African mahogany are wonderful. I love the richness of the lower frequencies on this drum. I have found that I can add more "depth" and "body" to the drum's sound by using a coated batter head with a power dot underneath the head. (Underneath, so you can still play using brushes without snagging a wire.) This drum responds well at a good range of dynamic levels, whether playing softly or hitting hard. The strainer is strong, smooth and simple. Loosen the snare wires and you have a great jazz snare drum. African mahogany! Get it while you can. This is definitely a keeper drum. I've had one of these since 2003. It sounds even better as it ages.

Comments about Pearl Omar Hakim Signature Snare Drum:

I have been a touring drummer for the last 5 year's... I have been trough alot of snare drum's in my short lifetime, but when i play'ed on the Omar Hakim for the first time i knew i had final found the sound of a true sounding snare drum... The attack of the Omar Hakim gave me goose bump's on the first solid hit. These is a full body'ed snare drum with awsome deepth and massive ATTACK... This drum can be used in any style of music.... But if you don't want to take my word for it, Just play on one......

BUY IT!!!

By Ryan-Aaeou

Comments about Pearl Omar Hakim Signature Snare Drum:

The snare is Amazing!!!! When I first got it I tightened it down just to see what it sounded like before I switched out the batter head. I was so pleased with the way it sounded I just left the stock batter on it. The only down side is since there is no muffle inside it has a lot of ring to it. Now this problem may have been solved if I had changed the batter like I had originally intended; instead, I placed one Moongel on it and was amazed at how it sounded. I will warn you this snare is of the louder snares Ive heard but its not obnoxiously loud. The crack it has is outstanding!!! I wouldnt trade this snare for any other.

Sweet snare!

By Scooter

from Chicago

Comments about Pearl Omar Hakim Signature Snare Drum:

Nice sounding but I had to do a little tweaking first. This snare has no built in dampener and delivered some unpleasant overtones when tuned up super high (Stewart Copeland style) which I fixed with some weather stripping foam. Later I tried these Mini-mad dampeners from Evans and those work very well. The drum now sounds sweet with excellent resonance and a somewhat mellower sound than a metal snare. A great buy!!!

good sound,good value

By Ben-jZ4F_

from San Jose,Ca.

Comments about Pearl Omar Hakim Signature Snare Drum:

This snare is great for the price. It's not fancy. It doesn't have die-cast hoops or brass swivel nuts in the lugs, but the shell is well-made and sounds great. The snare throw-off works fine and the stock snares and heads are more than adequate. In all, a great upgrade for the drummer on a budget. I also recommend the Chad Smith snare.

Unbelievable value

By Kevin McGovern

from Ypsilanti, MI

Comments about Pearl Omar Hakim Signature Snare Drum:

The Hakim is probably the most underpriced percussion instrument available. The African mahogany shell has the warmest woody tone, very reminiscent of Ringo's Ludwig Jazz Festivals, though somewhat higher in pitch. This is a terrific drum right out of the box, needing no change of heads, and has a classic sound, that is served by both stick and brushes. Anyone playing jazz, oldies, or rock should own this drum, especially it should be selling for twice the price! Did I mention the beautiful appearance of the mahogany through the clear finish? Buy this drum! It's wonderful.
