A great series of mallets

Comments about Mike Balter Pro Vibe Series Rattan Mallets:

I own three of the different models in the Provibe series, and have generally very good things to say about all of them. The 23 mediums are perhaps a little harder than people would think a medium mallet was, but they have a very clean, crisp sound that can cut through large ensembles without becoming obnoxious about it. The Jazz model has a shorter shaft than the other Balter vibe mallets I own, which is a blessing and a curse (it makes it a little harder to stretch out and nail 9ths and above). The head is an interesting mixture; played piano, it has a very full, gentle tone, but when you open up to a mezzo or above, the softness completely disappears, brightening up the sound considerably (they can get a little clangey if played at more than mezzoforte). The red softs are simply beautiful. If you've got a lower-cost vibe where the bottom octave is dead, try the reds in your left hand and you'd be surprised at how well the fundamentals open up.
