For 7 decades, the Black Beauty has been the snare of choice among demanding pros the world over.

The Ludwig Black Beauty Brass on Brass Snare is made with a solid brass shell that's machine drawn and spun into a seamless and great-sounding drum, then antique finished. The tone blends a musical combination of warmth with a metallic presence. This Beauty has excellent sensitivity at all volumes. The die-cast hoops produce a focused tone and are capable of resounding rim shots and sharp cross-stick sounds. This version of the Black Beauty features brass tube lugs, brass die-cast batter and snare hoops, brass-plated P86 Millennium snare strainer, brass-plated P33 snare butt.

Nothing comes close

By Chris-yUkLz

Comments about Ludwig Black Beauty Brass on Brass Snare Drum:

To simply put it this is the best Snare drum money can buy...Period. This is my 5th Black Beauty and I have never been dissapointed in my 35 years of playing them. The brass over brass is just a carry over and a further testament to this legendery drum...If you are looking for that ultimate snare especially for recording, look no further. My first experience with this drum was in 1978 while in a recording studio, the producer calmly walked into my booth and without a word replaced my snare with a Beauty. The very next day I had my own...

Update: Ludwig, Brass on Brass Black Beauty SD

By Tommy McGhee

from Barrington, RI. 02806

Comments about Ludwig Black Beauty Brass on Brass Snare Drum:

The replacement Brass on Brass, Black Beauty snare drum Ludwig so kindly sent to me in '05 was perfect. It arrived very soon after I had sent the first one back for some minor flaws. The 14'x5" sn. dr. has a very musical tone. It's tuning range offers a lot of flexibility in regards to its use. With a Remo Fiberskyn head on the batter side, an older style '40's to '50's sound can be attained. Tuning the head up a little more definitely enables the drum to play with that sharp, dry crack while retaining more of a mellow sound expected of a fine instrument that it is. Whether I need to play 'pp' or "fff', this drum can cut it. I shouldn't forget to mention either how absolutely beautiful this snare drum is to the eye . I highly recommend adding this drum to your arsenal. Thanyou Ludwig.

beautiful sound, somewhat disappointing workmanship

By Tommy McGhee

Comments about Ludwig Black Beauty Brass on Brass Snare Drum:

I purchased a 'brass/brass Black Beauty one year ago and just recently took Conn-Selmer up on their warranty. Though the 5X14 Blk, Bty. sounds incredible, a few problems had come to the surface. Out of the box, I found that a small flakeof brass plate was missing . This imperfection began to darken a little at first but had become worse. Also, the thumb throw-off was loose and rattled even when it was up in the on position; however, I do like the idea and basic design of this particular strainer and throw-off. One more thing, the black brass plate around the exterior of the drum is absolutely gorgeous but there was a very small ding on the first panel to the right of the strainer. I love this drum as it produces an extremely musical tone and at any dynamic level; I hope soon to have my drum's problems fixed under the warranty ASAP. My dealer and Conn-Selmer were very agreeable on the phone and I am sure they will make things right for me. Thank you.

A great drum with only one flaw

By clarence newell

from St. Louis, Missouri

Comments about Ludwig Black Beauty Brass on Brass Snare Drum:

I purchased my 6.5 x 14 Black Beauty ( the brass/black edition) about two years ago. The drum has exceeded every expectation I had for this legendary drum, at least as far as sound and versatility. I've used it for small and large jazz groups, rock bands, and in the studio and it's the best sounding and versatile of the 20-something snares of all brands that I own. After experimenting with several head types/brands, I settled on Attack's Terry Bozzio coated head with the reverse dot for the batter side and left the stock Weathermaster head on the bottom. The drum is very sensitive to different types of heads. I also found that I had to play the drum for a few months before the true sound really developed. It's almost as though it needed to "season" for awhile. My ONLY complaint is that the brass plating began to chip off the top die cast hoop at the places where I play rimshots and rim clicks. That happened shortly after I got the drum but has not affected the sound. Ludwig's Customer Service Dept. did not respond to an e-mail I sent them regarding this problem. Oh well, I would still buy another in a heartbeat. It's a "must have" for a player needing a versatile snare.

You must own one!

By Kevin McGovern

from Ypsilanti, MI

Comments about Ludwig Black Beauty Brass on Brass Snare Drum:

There just aren't any better sounding brass snares. The Black Beauties do it all, and look wonderful too. Just got mine, and it does low/phat or high crack or anything in between. Made my wife really stand up and take notice. Too bad Ludwig doesn't make whole kits like these (can you imagine a 26 x 14" Black Beauty BASS??)! Anyway, this drum has a classic sound and look, and I certainly feel every drummer should own one, at some point. You might never need another snare--except a 3 1/2 & 6 1/2 for a complete collection!

Top of The Line Snare

By Old Dog

from Laguna Niguel, CA

Comments about Ludwig Black Beauty Brass on Brass Snare Drum:

I originally purchased a Ludwig hammered bronze snare and while it was a beautiful drum, it was just too dry a sound for my liking so I exchanged it two days later for the 6.5 x 14 Black Beauty which is an absolutely phenomenal drum in every sense of the word. One of the high points of this drum is the relative ease in tuning which will give you virtually any tonal quality you want from a loud crack to deeper tones if desired. This review doesn't really do it justice, you need to go out and play one. If you're looking for state of the art, look no further. It just doesn't get any better for the money.

A great snare drum!

By Richhale1

from New Orleans, LA USA

Comments about Ludwig Black Beauty Brass on Brass Snare Drum:

I own about 15 snare drums (all different brands), but this Ludwig tops them all. The best sounding snare drum I've ever played. This one drum can get so many different sounds, and the construction is flawless.

THE standard, the Black Beauty!

By Alan Ledgerwood

from Longview WA. USA

Comments about Ludwig Black Beauty Brass on Brass Snare Drum:

Obviously it's a beautiful drum, but the sound is truly why you should buy this drum. Once you replace the standard Ludwig head with a remo ambassador you can tune this drum to sound any way you like. From deep and thick, to that famous high crack, you can not find a better snare drum. I get nothing but rave comments from other musicians. It is a bit louder than other snare drums when you want it to be, but it is also the most sensitive I've ever played.

state of art snare

By C--_v3y

Comments about Ludwig Black Beauty Brass on Brass Snare Drum:

My first impression. I was blown away by the beauty of this drum. It took my breath away. Then I got to play it. wow. The sound is loud and crisp and very easy to control. It sounds good played at any volume and it cuts through the amplified guitars like a knife. I didn't change a thing, it sounded very good "out of the box".
