Forget Dynamic Mics

By Lynn Cantwell

from Freeland, WA

Comments about Shure SM86 Cardioid Condenser Vocal Mic:

Forget Dynamic Mics! The Shure SM86 Cardioid Condenser mic has everything you need. It is much more sensitive than it's dynamic equivalent - the Shure SM58 or even the Beta 58. The sensitivity makes it great for 2 singers on 1 mic or for vocal and acoustic instrument on 1 mic, and it's rejection of sound out the back greatly reduces the feedback like you'd get from a studio mic. One of it's best features is that it doesn't rumble when you handle it or move it, and it won't pick up noise from the floor like when you tap your foot! If you do a lot of handheld work, it's kinda small for a good grip so I would recommend using a wireless mic like the Shure SLX2/SM86.

Good sound

Comments about Shure SM86 Cardioid Condenser Vocal Mic:

Very good sound, but hard to achieve. Mic is very sensitive. Very good on a stand. As long as you don't move the stand around.

Outstanding sonic characteristics

By M. Chakravarty

from Bahrain

Comments about Shure SM86 Cardioid Condenser Vocal Mic:

A long awaited studio quality sound from a live performer since the SM87/Beta87. This mic is a real performer and that too at quite a reasonable price. I've tried it flat out and this one handles lows (with conspicuous proximity effect) and highs with grace. At the mid-range it is quite open and sonically gratifying. I've even tried the SM86 with the Joe meek VC3Q with convincingly warm vocals with minimum EQ and compression. Handling noise is present but with 80dB attenuation at the console, its no problem at all. This one is a winner.
