Last year I bought out of my school budget for each kid this YRS-20 recorder. Each could choose the color, which is already a motivational plus. They all loved it and I found as a beginner instrument it is just what they need. Easy to keep it clean and the intonation is fine too for that. And the price is super.

My third grader needed for recorder training they have in school. He liked the cool color and the price was good. Teacher thinks sound is good.

It looks like a toy, but it's actually better than a toy for its price. Moreover it looks pretty stylish. I have a green one.
