I love this French Horn, it plays with the most beautiful, dark sound. Of all the French Horns I have played, this one tunes like no other. It produces a glorious sound on notes such as the high C, and can sound just like a tuba on the low C (two ledger lines below the bass clef staff). It has been nice to me as I have been to it.It is durable, it will take a beating. I have never had any physical problems with the horn. I use Yamaha's Rotor oil in my horn, and Selmer's tuning slide grease. It is truly a fantastic French HornI definitely recommend this to the French Horn player who understands the power of the instrument. Professional and student, it doesn't matter. I was producing a professional level sound in my first year of playing with this Horn.A++++

I do enjoy the versatility of the horn. It operates well between very low to middle ranges. I have found it to be somewhat precarious/problematic in the high range, especially my A's above the staff. Perhaps an idiosyncratic flaw to my specific horn, but nonetheless an annoyance. Test it carefully before buying. Otherwise wholly satisfied.

A Really Good Horn

By Zachary Dobos

from Troy University, AL

Comments about Yamaha YHR-668II Professional Double French Horn:

I purchased my Yamaha 668 ND (Nickle, Detachable bell) a while ago. It is a really good horn. Intonation is good, A and D in the staff are a little sharp, so I flat them with my hand. This isn't really a problem, and probably varies player to player. There was a small cosmetic defect (welding maybe?) but wasn't worth complaining about. The case is really nice and has space for mutes and such. The tone is dark and full, you can get more volume before the tone disintegrates than my old horn (i.e. smaller horns). The low register really plays out, I had to get used to the upper register because it plays different. It feels lighter (in weight) than the Conn 8D. Valves and slides all work nice, and the adjustable trigger is nice too. Over all it is a good horn, as expected. There are better horns (and specialty horns) out there, but for the price range, I feel this Yamaha may be the best deal.

Excellent horn

Comments about Yamaha YHR-668II Professional Double French Horn:

I played on our school's ancient 8D in high school, which was a faulty instrument and had awful intonation. I bought the 668 II when it first came out and I've had it ever since. It's a great instrument! The intonation is superb and the tone is dark and mellow. It's also very responsive and great in all registers. It plays smoothly and in tune in the upper register, and is very resonant in the lower register. My only complaint, as someone else has already said, is that the lightweight metal they use on this horn dents VERY easily. I've had to get dents repaired twice on the horn already. The dents and cost to repair them are worth it though, as this is a great horn for a player of any level.

Great Horn

By Theresa-AyL4D

Comments about Yamaha YHR-668II Professional Double French Horn:

As a high school student wanting to major in music, I have so many great experiences with this horn. I have no problems with my range that are related to my horn and it is the perfect balance of a great range and great dynamic abilities. Anyone that is not satisfied with this horn will never be satisfied by any other horn. I suggest this horn to any student that wants a quality horn that will grow with them.

One of the best on the market

By Frank

from Indiana

Comments about Yamaha YHR-668II Professional Double French Horn:

This is the best horn I've ever played. I've played Kings, Holtons, Amantis, and Alloras but this is just hands down the best ever. It has a warm, dark tone, great intonation, and it shines with more radiance than my Holton H179. When I heard Conn was buying out Holton and replacement parts would be scarce, I bought the Yamaha and it was 100 times better than my Holton, which I expected anyway from Yamaha. I've never played a Conn 8D, but from what I've heard their not all that great. But when ever my Holton gets worn out, I might sell it to a dealer or pawn it but it won't matter because I have the better Yamaha. This horn will tackle all the high notes. With this instrument I finally hit a double high C on a horn. I had never done that with any other horn, I had done with a trumpet on many occasions, but never with a French Horn. Yamaha makes it possible for me to do the impossible. With a Yamaha 30GP Custom or a Holton MDC Gold, this instrument is the very best.

best factory-made horn

By Dan-GCKPG

from Minneapolis, MN

Comments about Yamaha YHR-668II Professional Double French Horn:

I wasn't a huge fan of the previous 66 it seemed stuffy next to the newer Conn 8D I had. But this redesign is a completely different instrument. I now play an Elkhart Conn 8d that I adore...but I'm feeling the tug of this 668II. It's very even and in tune and seems to play itself. The tonal color seems more like my Elkhart 8D than a new 8d! I now recommend this horn to all of my private students.

Awesome horn!

By Howard Summers

from Salt Lake City, UT

Comments about Yamaha YHR-668II Professional Double French Horn:

Absolutely perfect mix of sound and articulation. Very even throughout all registers. In this price range, nothing else comes close. To get a better horn you'd have to pay more than double. I've had to clean my Yamaha valves a little more often than on other brands of horns.

Wonderfully responsive

Comments about Yamaha YHR-668II Professional Double French Horn:

Compared to my 8D, the new Yamaha 668 II (yellow bass) is much more responsive and therefore more fun to play. The tone is darker and, to me, more beautiful. In the mid-range, on the F side, the notes seem to lock-in better. The lower range seems as good as the 8D. The upper range (Bb side)may be a little better than the 8D, but not much. Caution: This responsiveness seems to be achieved by using lighter metal in the bell, therefore more susceptible to dings. Had to move finger hook.
