Holton

The inimitable Holton Farkas!

The Holton H179 Professional Farkas French Horn is regarded among working professionals and leading academics as the flagship of the Holton fleet. It produces the truly centered tone sought by all players. True temper makes it a delight to fly over even the most difficult passages. The solid nickel silver edition of the model H179 French Horn has especially good center and projection. This free-blowing Farkas horn features a rich, dark sound designed especially for the "big horn" artist. The tapered tubing and throat of the bell are larger for a bigger, darker tone. The bell flare produces a mellow, velvety tone plus a little overtone of a ringing quality. Hard nickel silver responds quickly and sounds brighter up close.

Key of Bb/F double, .468" bore; 12-1/4" bell of hand-hammered nickel silver; large-throated .310 venturi of nickel silver; noiseless string action, short stroke with stainless steel spring; solid nickel silver slides inside and out; tapered hand-lapped brass valve rotors; nickel silver finish.

I just received my new 279 a few days ago and I am definitely impressed! I have owned 3 Holtons, a Conn, a Getzen and a King and this is, by far, the best horn I've owned. All slides are a perfect fit, the valves are super-tight and the sound is incredible! Definitely a class act and WW&BW's fantastic price makes the deal even sweeter.

I got this horn when I was in 7th grade, It worked great for me in middle school. Now, I am in a Grammy winning high school music program and my good old Holton is just not cutting it. It has an amazing low range, unfortunately, band music does not require much of a low range at all. I find that the Holton horns have a hard time in the upper register. The horn can be a bit tense and that prevents you from getting up there. I feel I have out grown my horn and I'm only in 10th grade. It would be a great horn from most high schoolers, but beyond high school it could be questionable.

I recommend this horn to any player wanting to enhance their playing ability

By James Raincock

from Red Deer, Alberta

Comments about Holton H179 Farkas Series Fixed Bell Double Horn:

The Holton H179 is by far the best horn that I have played. The Horn adapts to the skills of the player and encourages performers to improve their playing skill level. I have used this horn for over 4 years now and nothing compares to it. This horn is definitely a good Horn for Intermediate/College/Professional use. The Horn provides a rich, dark, and yet mellow tone that can be heard effortlessly through any large orchestra or symphonic setting. This instrument is also ideal for small venues such as brass ensembles or duets. The horn is easy to maintain, but the string mechanism does take a bit of effort to fine tune. The horn does hold its tuning well, and needs very little time to warm up. The horn has a tremendous range, 4 and a half octaves.

Holton 180

By Kyle William

from Ypsilanti

Comments about Holton H179 Farkas Series Fixed Bell Double Horn:

I've played on an old Elkhart Conn 6D for two years. I loved its flexibility and tone color. I recently purchased a new horn- a Holton 180, after trying out several Yamaha's, Conn 8D's, and a Hoyer. I personally found the Conn instruments to be somewhat inconsistent, while the Yamahas didn't provide me with a comfortable highrange. I chose the Holton 180 for its flexibility, timbre, and high-low comfort. The Hoyer was as consistent and flexible as the Holton but the Holton just felt better in my hands.

Meets my capabilities

By James Sterling

from Mimbres, New Mexico

Comments about Holton H179 Farkas Series Fixed Bell Double Horn:

Ever since I started playing french horn, in the sixth grade, I have played on many different kinds of horns. None of them impressed me too much, and I ended up overpowering them. The Holton 179, however is an exception. I find the quality and playing abilities of this horn to be above average. The tone produced is dark, and rich, while providing the brilliant looks needed for that great 'first impression.' I have to say, after all the different horns I have played I highly prefer the Farkas. I have yet to find a horn I enjoyed more, or even one that could provide what I require to perform my best. If you are looking for a good strong horn, that is both classy and powerful, I highly recommend the Farkas 179!

I love this horn

By RBEven

from Pueblo CO

Comments about Holton H179 Farkas Series Fixed Bell Double Horn:

This is the best horn I have ever played. I've been playing mine for about three years now. since I got this horn, my playing and tone quality have improved greatly. The school horn I had been playing on was terrible. This one has very smooth silent rotary valves and looks great under stage lights. Whenever I bring it out everyone is in awe with its beauty as well as its sound. This horn is going to last me for the rest of my life. Because of my improvement with it I can go to Europe with the state ambassadors. Great horn for any serious horn player. THANKS HOLTON

good with one problem

By Lynn-8b4Fo

Comments about Holton H179 Farkas Series Fixed Bell Double Horn:

I find my Holton horn to have outstanding tone quality and it stays in tune well, but I would classify it as an "oil hog." It goes through about five times as much valve oil as previous horns that I have played.

Very nice Horn.

Comments about Holton H179 Farkas Series Fixed Bell Double Horn:

I purchased a h-181 last summer, it's a beautiful horn. Amazing tone and air movement. Very nice to play and beautiful to look at. The rose brass makes all the difference. The company was terrible to me though. They billed my credit card for the horn, then falsified a tracking number, and then told me the horn never existed. Billing me for something that doesn't exist... I finally got it however and it was fine.

I am a student at a high school in my area. I just got a new horn, and this one is the one I got. For those considering on buying, THIS is the horn to get. It's top of the line, works great in concerts and competitions. Easy to play.
