I found one of these in the case of my school Bach 42B and after a little while of playing trombone did research and found out all about the heavy top thing. I have tried it , and although I can see its uses, it does improve volume, the darkness it adds is too much. It takes away that bright "trombone sound". I'm using a 6 1/2AL.

I use the "L" size booster on a Wick bass shank mouthpieces to play large bore tenor and bass trombones. I find the added weight equally distributed on the mouthpiece increases volume & improves the tone in all registers. It also helps increase the range of the instrument . . . great results from a simple but well-engineered product. Easy to put on or remove, this will in effect double the number of mouthpieces you have in your arsenal. I would not like to try to produce the true trombone sound without one. Designed for the Wick line of mouthpieces, but some models will fit other brands.
