Comments about Hal Leonard Fretboard Roadmaps for Acoustic Guitar Book and CD:
Great for beginners, thru mid level players. Even more experienced players may be able to garner information from this combo. Sokolov starts you out assuming you know nothing about the instrument in chapter 1 and progresses from there, teaching you notes, which leads to scales and chordal patterns, which leads to strumming or picking patterns etc. all over the fretboard. each successive lesson builds on the last one. I am only 1 day into self teaching myself guitar using this book and have gleened a bunch of information. Other books tell you how to form chords, but don't go into WHY and HOW of chordal structure. Sokolovs approach is one of start with the basics and build giving you the "what", "How" and "Why" of each lesson. The book also includes a playalong cd so you can hear what the goal of each lesson is suppossed to sound like. If you want a book to teach you the complexities of the guitar in a fairly easy to understand way-this may be your answer. Yes you have to stop and think about some of what he is writting in order to understand it,where as with a local teacher you could simply stop them and ask them a question, but overall a great book. shame the "Fretboard Roadmaps DVD" does not exactly co inside with this book.
