Comments about Hal Leonard An Approach To Jazz Improvisation (Book/CD):
The book begins with a review of the diatonic chords built from major and melodic/harmonic minors. It is then organized as reviews of the different chord categories, and a review of the scale choices that work with them. It provides samples of leads over those chords and help analyzing how those leads were chosen. I'd recommend having a good background in the theory regarding the diatonic chords and their relative modes, and THEN utilizing this as a more in depth practice guide. I would not recommend it as an introductory guide but consider it a valuable resource for intermediate players with good background in theory.
