The Skyline 55-01 Electric Bass Guitar retains all the key features that have made Lakland the choice of professionals: ash body, flat-sawn maple neck, a choice of fretboard woods, Bartolini MK1 split-coil soapbar pickups, and 3-band buffered active preamp. Controls include cut/boost bass, mid, and treble; a panning-style pickup blend; and master volume (with pull-out switching to bypass EQ). 35" scale.
Lakland luthiers now do their fret work using Plek technology to assure optimum playability. Plek is a CAD/CAM machine with scanning capability. It was developed to perform high-speed, highly accurate fret dressing, nut and bridge slotting and shaping, and engraving work. When used by an experienced luthier, the Plek machine produces necks with fretwork and action that equal the very best handwork and does it consistently.

The craftsmanship is brilliant! The neck on this bass is the best I've ever played. The frets and the action are both low making this effortlessly to play and extremely fast. The pickups and preamp create a rich, rich, rich tone. The bass can produce an array of tones that more than match basses 4x the price. Great for all styles from gospel to punk. The preamp is so transparent. I use the passive mode for all finger style playing then set the active EQ for slap (boost lows and highs with the mids scooped). All I need to do is push the volume knob in for on the fly changes from passive to active, back to passive. How easy is that! I was so impressed by this bass I bought two. One with flats and the other with rounds. All the tones I'll ever need. Did I mention how effortlessly this bass is to play! Every bassist that picks this thing up wants to get one too. "The greatest 5 string I've ever played!" is the common statement. Compared to the more expensive 55-02, I prefer the tone of the 55-01. If you don't get a chance to compare the two yourself you can go to the official Lakland website where they have thoughtfully provided sound samples of all their models with various pickup configurations and different musical genres. I got this bass on a reccomendation from some guys on an internet forum. I was not dissapointed at all. The neck on this bass is one of the most comfortable of any 5 string I've tried. The finish was great. The frets were treated by the new "Plek" technology from the factory. String spacing is great. The bass is well built and the hardware is high quality. The Bartolini pickups that come with this bass are more than adequate. The only knock on this bass is the preamp. The preamp in this bass does not do it justice. It works well, but the sound is not all that great to me. I knew this before the purchase. I just changed the preamp last night and it sounds just like my $2,400 boutique bass. This is the best value out there on a 5 string hands down. I like the fact that you can customize it very easily by changing the preamp and pickups to sound like any high end bass out there. Kudos to Lakland for offering a fantastic product at an affordable price. I would buy another one in a heartbeat.
