This is the 'new and improved' 15 watt VOX Pathfinder now with spring reverb (finally!). The 'clean' tones are bright and chimey. Tweek the Volume and Gain controls to produce terrific, vintage tube-driven overdrive tones. This thing can bark too. Volume is surprisingly loud. The adjustable reverb adds great echo/depth, and the tremolo is terrific if you enjoy that type of effect. (It fun to use occasionally, especially for Nirvana 'Come As You Are'); If you're looking for that great vintage VOX sparkly chime and crunchy, but not brutal, overdrive, this is about the best sounding small solid-state amp out there for under $200. Try one out, let your own ears be the judge. This might be the perfect small practice amp you are looking for. lr** Jan 04,2003

Man this thing is LOUD for 15 amps! I use this amp with my Washburn Washington "J" hollowbody and this thing roars! I get some great tones out of this, and an especially dirty soud if needed ..Not metal dirty per say, but "Pumpkin's (Smashing that is)" dirty, if you will. I use this with my wah pedal and I get some great midrange notes to stand out. Clean, dirty, and funky are just a few of the tones I can gather, and this keeps up with my band! Solid amp for the price, and very versatile!

A path to warm tone

By zedthewizard

from Undisclosed

Comments about Vox Pathfinder V9168R 15w 1x8 Guitar Combo Amp:

For a small solid state 15 watt amp I have to give it a nine. It's a very warm amp on it's own. Much warmer than my marshall 15r. However, the pathfinder does have some nice features: reverb, tremolo, separate headphone and line out, the reverb and tremolo can be on/off with optional footswitch. So, a warm solid state amp with tremolo and reverb . . . anyone say bluesy rock. I don't even use the reverb on my little marshall. The pathfinder's may or may not be as strong, but it adds just what you need. So too, with the tremolo. Texture is added to the warm sound.

I have yet to take my marshall 15r out to compare to the vox pathfinder 15r, but soon. There is still a place for the marshall, but I'd definitely replace the pathfinder asap . . . not so with the marshall especially because the new model have digital effects as a must.

Another feature of the vox pathfinder is the top boost. Some say you get your best tones with it turned on. I might agree, without it you definitely get airy and the controls are not as tight as with the sound compared to a marshall 15r. However, I run a pedal or two or none into an ART tube project series preamp into the vox for added warmth, and as an apt. dweller and as a pedal user 75 percent of the time, I don't need it. However, when I first bought the amp, I played with the top boost on and volume low all the time. It does and a good deal of brightness without so much airyness.

Again, if needed, then I would replace ASAP for the price.

Nice little amp with great tone.

Comments about Vox Pathfinder V9168R 15w 1x8 Guitar Combo Amp:

I am a working professional and I give private lessons. I bought this little amp primarily for when I go to a students home for lessons. I wanted something small, light, and relatively loud that had a good clean tone and a passable distorted sound. This little Vox does that, and how.

First off, onstage I am totally tube. Tube amps have a vibrancy of tone that has yet to be matched by solid state. However, this wee Vox is the best sounding solid state amp I have ever heard, at any price. No kidding.

I was instantly impressed with the 15Rs clean tone. It faithfully recreates that famous chimey Vox tone of the AC 30/15s. The controls are similar to a single input version of those on the AC 15 with the addition of a Boost switch. With its simple Treble and Bass tone controls, it is not lacking in brightness. I rarely set the Treble above 12:00 and generally have the Bass running wide open. The clean tone is so good that I have used this amp for a couple of jazz gigs. The reverb sounds like the good ol spring reverb of the Vox tube amps. The Tremolo is tasteful enough, but its not an effect that I find useful very often. Its there if you want it.

As good as the clean tones are, it was this little amps distortion that blew me away. It is a very convincing distorted sound that goes beyond what youd normally associate with a Vox tube amp. While the Vox tube amps usually have a more refined and subtle distortion, with the Gain and Boost all the way the up, the 15R produces enough distortion to please any metalhead. It is also louder than youd think possible for a lightweight inexpensive combo.

If you are a pro in need of a light practice amp capable of a few really good sounds, this amp would be more than adequate. If you are a garage rocker who simply wants some decent guitar tones but you dont want to break the bank, this is also a good choice.

Is this amp so good that it would make me forget about my vintage Boogie Mark II-C? Naw, but if the Boogie was in the shop, I wouldnt hesitate to use the Vox Pathfinder 15R for any gig.

Just defies reason

By Joe Faraldi

Comments about Vox Pathfinder V9168R 15w 1x8 Guitar Combo Amp:

I've been through a lot of different amps lately, trying to find the one that will give me the tone I'm looking for. Tried a couple of highly regarded modeling amps and while they sounded good, they didn't cut it with my overall needs. A friend suggested the Pathfinder 15R and I was very hesitant because of the price and the size. How could this thing sound good. Then I played it. This is without question an amp that every guitarist should have. It's so incredibly full and balanced, responds to picking and guitar volume the was a great amp should. The speaker, an 8", british-voiced driver, is huge sounding. I returned another amp that cost 3x this price. I ordered TWO of the Pathfinder 15r. You owe it to yourself to get this amp.

GREAT LITTLE AMP

By sbailey3@gmail.com

Comments about Vox Pathfinder V9168R 15w 1x8 Guitar Combo Amp:

Great amp, good tone, has line output to run to PA, with external speaker out. I get compliments all the time on it's sound. It has reverb, tremolo and other features. I have ran a 15 inch Guitar speaker out of it and it sounds great. Make sure you read the manual for all capabilities. I use it at church for contemporary worship. Have used it at clubs and parties as well. What a compact solution that has good tone. When you need extra volume for leads it does have a boost that you can access with a simple footswitch (not included). It is greatfeature to have in a low priced amp when you need the extra volume for a solo. Overall tone is pretty decent for such a small amp with an 8 in. speaker. Kudo's to VOX for this amp...!!!! it is great for practice. But, I use it with great results for performances in front of 300 people and am not disappointed with sound. It has good clean sound settings. I used it with a Fender Strat with hot rails for rock, country and a worship, Epi Dot custom for rock and jazz, Aria PE elite for Rock and worship. Acoustic's sound good as well. I have used my Martin GT-16 with a fishman pickup thru it and it sounds fine.....! This is probably the best money I have spent for an amp given the use I get out of it. I have other amps. a Fender, a Roland and a Crate but I use this one probably the most.

Vox Pathfinder 15 R

By Charles-XqS5p

Comments about Vox Pathfinder V9168R 15w 1x8 Guitar Combo Amp:

Just got the amp today and it is truly retro. I had a Vox amp in the 60's and this looks like its baby. It has a good sound, it's not too loud, just perfect for a few guys getting together and jammin'. Get the footswitch. You don't need to haul all kinds of effects around with the built in tremolo and reverb. It arrived in perfect condition and fast. Played a Tele with 2 humbuckers through it and was pleased. If this is your first amp you'll be happy. It's probably my 50th amp but who's counting.
