The Soundblox Pro Bass Envelope Filter is an evolution of its hugely popular predecessor, the standard Soundblox BEF. As before, there are 22 different envelope filter effects to choose from including 2 Pole and 4 Pole Low Pass variations, Single Peak, Triple Peak, Peak/Notch variations, as well as Phaser settings. Each of these settings can be further modified with a variety of control options including positive/negative filter sweeps, sweep range, attack and decay speed settings, or frequency range selection.

In this Pro version, users are able to choose from four different modulation sources including standard envelope filter sweeps, selectable LFO wave forms, a passive expression pedal and the Hot Hand motion sensing ring. An expression pedal input can be used to control filter modulation like in a standard wah pedal or a wide variety of parameters including sweep range, effect selection, LFO speed and more. As in our other Pro Series pedals, the BEF Pro features three footswitches to hold six customizable presets but also includes an option for Tap Tempo LFO on one of the footswitches.

There's a lot to love about this pedal - great sound quality, a ton of useful effects, expression pedal input, 6 storable presets, and so much user control. While I love it, I'm not all that thrilled about the build quality. The case is a high-grade plastic, and not metal like most stomp boxes. The faceplate is stuck on with some kind of PSA adhesive, and when I got mine, the whole lower right corner was "lifting" off. I pressed it down to get it to re-stick, which it did for about 10 minutes, and then simply lifted up again. The left plastic button that controls the left EQ cursor movement contacts this faceplate when pressed, so some of the time it doesn't return back up completely, and requires some special attention....
The 6 user presets are stored in 2 banks of 3, and to toggle between the banks, you have to press a small plastic button. This button could have been made larger for better access on stage. In a studio, it's not an issue, but on stage it's not easy to access or actuate.
There are a ton of user controlled parameters, but the ones on the "back page" aren't entirely easily accessible, and the little abbrebiations they give you at the top of the setting "band" aren't easily read.
Then there's the whole varaible led indicator selection light issue. Both with the effect selection dial, and the eq/parameters band readout, it isn't really easy to tell what "value" you have set because there aren't enough lights to correspoond with the values. They use what I think is a silly double light, and variable brightness way to kinda tell you where these values are set. In the case of the effect selection dial, some of the effects are indicated by a single LED, but then the values in-between are indicated by a double light that spans 2 selections, and there's no way to tell what value is actually set unless you "rock" the wheel back an forth to see what the surrounding settings are. This can be problematic as well on the eq band readout when accessing the back page. When assigning a value to an input, they refer to values as numbers, but you have to carefully count how many clicks you've turned the dial.
I don't know - it's a great pedal, sounds fantastic, but the user interface is horrible.

A couple easy things that would make it better:
1.) a sensativity knob that would set the pedal to trip the envelope to playing dynamics. It seems that the harder you play, the louder the effect, BUT the envelope responds the same, just louder or softer. Maybe I'm missing where this can be set somewhere? I don't think so.

2.) An output volume knob that isn't buried on the "back page." Give me a knob on the front, and don't have me select through parameters (nor require me to remember which one it is) on the back page to set the output level.

There are a ton of envelope filters out there, and this one is really nice with a host of configurable options, but due to what I think is a poor user interface, and build construction, it would not be my first choice to use live. I will never retire my MXR envelope filter, and although it may not be anywhere near as sonically flexible, I know if I drop it, it'll still keep working. This one, I don't know, and will leave home.
